The creation of Purni Bore was the result of drilling by the French Petroleum Company in 1963. The company came to this site to explore the rock strata beneath the Great Artesian Basin, found at a depth of 1400 metres. The bore was drilled to a depth of 1880 metres, then capped an sealed. With this large volume of water flowing out of the Great Artesian Basin, Purni Bore affected water flow to Dalhousie Mound Springs over 70km away.
The temperature of the water flowin out of the bore head is 85degrees.
