The drive to Milford Sound was a long one - roughly 8 hours drive time on winding mountain roads. We broke the journey in Te Anau with time to visit the local Christmas fete...complete with Bagpipers...random!
The drive down to Milford Sound itself was stunning with fields of lupins, glacial lakes, waterfalls and even snow in some places. We had some further run-ins with the destructive Kea's (mountain parrots) who fixed their beady eyes on our pristine, shiny red hire car and were determined to land on it. Mark and a Kea sidled round and round the car, eyeballing each other in a stand-off and Kim then had to resort to swatting at them with a rolled up magazine as the devious birds soared in, claws at the ready, aiming to land on the roof and destroy the paintwork....
In Milford Sound we realised that we had booked our overnight cruise in the Sound on the wrong day and had a day and a night to kill in Milford village. The dorm at Milford Lodge was a delight - it looked like a bomb had hit the place with bizarrely patterned men's pants littering the floor and 'girlie' mags everywhere... 3 rather smelly German lads were responsible one of whom had the loudest farts we've ever heard - nice!
Sadly it was raining hard and while we did do a short walk along the bank of the Sound we were then so wet that we had to partially strip off and dry our trousers on the dashboard heaters of the car!
The overnight cruise on the Milford Wanderer was really good fun, the food was tasty and we swapped travel stories with an English couple (James and Sarah). While we didn't get to see the Sound in full picture-postcard glory as it carried on raining heavily, it was still very atmospheric and we saw seals, dolphins at play and a rare Crested Fiordland penguin hopping around on the rocks.
