Today marks exactly three months since I arrived in Edinburgh, Scotland! On first glance the city looks old and beautiful, ancient (well historic) buildings line the streets and off to the side a wee bit sits a castle on the rocky hills edge, its breath taking... below the castle is Princes Gardens, at the moment it is covered in spring flowers, yellow, white pink its a blaze of colours. The city is great because you can be right in the city centre and then you walk for about ten minutes and its quiet suburban life.
The majority of my time here has been in Old Town (ye ol town), I lived in a long termers hostel called Budget Backpackers. This hostel sits right on the corner of cowgate just before it turns into grassmarket-this is home to many pubs and clubs. Many nights have been spent in this locality! Every night out in Edinburgh is garuanteed to be different even if you go to the same places! there is always hens parties and bucks nights-your certain to find groups of people costumed as well! its also really cheap-well compared to Aus anyway- one place that is real cheap is opium on cowgate- upstairs is heavy metal so if your into that music your nights set- if not then have pre drinks at opium then go off in search of better music across the street is espionage which has more dance music-if you can handle the sleazy guys that is- and the same with the hive- except at the hive you can get £1 shots of tequila or vodka! On other notes this part of old town is situated right near the meadows- which is like it says- meadows of grass- on a suny day this gets so packed people come from all over edinburgh (and bring portable BBQs) to lay on grass and soak up some much needed rays! groups play football and frisbee right in the middle of the people sitting-its amazing though one minute it can be completely empty the next there is no patches of grass left! on days like this you can hear birds chirping and kids playing- it feels like home and it definitely doesnt feel like your minutes away from the busy city traffic
Recently I moved to a Hostel on the Royal Mile-Brodies- Its a nice location, the royal mile is the road that seperates old town and new town- probably one of the most beautiful streets of edinburgh. there are many pubs found here specialising in whisky of course! The royal mile tavern or the tav as us locals call it is great value! especially for backpackers who get a discounted menu. This street is endless and never lets you forget that your in scotland- souvenir shops are plentiful probably nearly every second shop is one! not that you could forget anyway! when your in the street bagpipes can be heard in the distance- this street is very touristy! but leads straight to the castle to one side and the ocean can be seen in the distance on the other side. the most beautiful sunsets can be photographed here as the sun sets behind the historic buildings. this is also where the famous heart on the ground is found- where it is custom to spit on it.
Soon there will be photos- they say a million more words then i could ever say to describe edinburgh- so check em out!
