"Maropeng means "returning to the place of origin" in Setswana"
Maropeng is pretty famous for the finding of Mrs Ples in their caves.
"The oldest hominid fossils from the Cradle are more than 3-million years old and belong to the genus Australopithecus. There were many species or types of Australopithecus, which lived in Eastern and Southern Africa. "Mrs Ples", the famous fossil of a skull of an Australopithecus africanus, was discovered at the Sterkfontein Caves by palaeontologists Dr Robert Broom and John Robinson in 1947. "Mrs Ples" is about 2.1-million years old. In 1997, palaeontologist Professor Ron Clarke and his assistants Stephen Motsumi and Nkwane Molefe, discovered the full skeleton of an Australopithecus inside the Sterkfontein Caves, encased in breccia, a type of rock. This skeleton, called "Little Foot", is still being excavated."
Today Uncle Bryan took us to Maropeng The cradle Of Humankind. It was a fun morning out and we learnt lots about the history of the world. When we entered the museum there was a really big water fountain. Jasmine made a wish and threw a coin in.
We then had to enter the museum by going down some stairs and into a rubber boat. We went round this little course and seen different stages of the world ice-age, stone-age etc it was really good. Jasmine was abit scared because each section was really dark until you entered and she thought something was going to jump out on us! She enjoyed it though.
As we entered the main part of the museum you go walk off and play with the different machines and see how much you knew about the world. Jasmine & Kieara had a good time. Kajo and Angel spent a lot of time in front of the camera posing!
They also have this really cool tunnel with a bridge you have to walk through. Its really fun because the bridge stays still but the wall spins and it makes you think you are tipping so you start staggering. Jasmine didnt like it at first but after awhile she realised that it was ok and it was only the wall moving.
Outside of the Museum they had built a sandpit where you could dig and find skeletons. We had a great day.
Plase have a look at our photos!
Lots Of Love
