Woke up in Vicky's apartment at UF and she had to go to the college for the day, so I decided just to have a chilled out day and wander around. I met her flat mate Morgan who was really nice and a fine co-host. The big thing at the college is the American Football team the Florida Gators and so on my way around the campus I stopped off at the team shop. Well good lord! I have never seen so much merchandise and a bigger shop for a team in my life. But typically the one thing I wanted to buy, a patch to sew on my backpack, was the only thing they didn't have and so I had to get a luggage tag instead, what are the chances!
I was looking forward to the evening's festivities as Vicky had arranged a meal which was to be cooked by her friend Stephanie and attended by many other of her friends. The food was fantastic and the red wine was going down like water and so the evening was going a treat, not mention that for the majority I was the only man surrounded by nine friendly, chatty, good looking American college girls. Every British man's dream! lol. There were no plans to go out as it was a Monday night but one of the girls Simone decided that I had to go out and get a taste of UF nightlife (which I was pleased about as I really wanted to sample a night out at an American uni) and so me, her, Mia and her boyfriend went to two great named bars. The first was called Balls and then the Salty Dog, it could be even funnier if one day they merged!
Woke up the next morning somewhere I wasn't expecting (not unusual some may say) and feeling pretty crap, damn you red wine! Simone provided a joint though, which made life much better, and I headed off to a famous local bagel house to fuel myself for the day ahead. My first stop was the Gator's stadium which was fantastic, I mean far bigger than my own football team's stadium. I wish I had been able to go to a game and tailgate. Then I went to the Harn Art museum, which had a varied and interesting collection, and the butterfly house both on campus.
It was time for me to move on and get the overnight Greyhound bus to New Orleans. The girls were all really nice and good fun yet my time there was far too short and wish I could have spent longer, but I was excited about getting to NOLA as there would be the Mardi Gras build up, indeed it would be even better as the New Orleans Saints had got through to the Superbowl which would be on whilst I was there! The coming week would exceed all my expectations in many ways, but that's for the next instalment…
