Have arrived in Luang Prebang after two days on a long boat cruising down the Mekong river.
Our exit from Thailand was fairly smooth, just queue up, hand in your departure card and get your passport stamped. Then it got interesting, after meeting our Laos guide we boarded a little boad with all our suitcases piled on and crossed the river to Laos. Caotic scenes as everyone qued to get their passports stamped and an entry visa. Complete contrast between the two countries. Luckily our guide queued up for our visas while we queued at another window to get sone local currency (the Kip) we then went for a Coffee at the ferry landing as we could not enter Laos without our passports - or so we thought.
Two of our group decided to go for a stroke straight past the passport control barrier just smiling at the guards seemed to do the trick!
The trip down the river was relaxing as we sailed down with mountains on each side with lush greenery turning to white sand as it reached the river.
Stopped half way at a basic hotel and had an interesting walk round the local market before continuing today to visit a local village where we bought some rice whiskey and visited caves with thousands of Budfha statues.
Just back after a meal in town to our 5 star hotel. Nice to have comforts and a bathroom with bath, toilet and shower which are all separate... And we can put our loo roll down the toilet again!
Looking forward to seeing Luang Prabang over the next two days
