The final full day for us here in Iceland and the time has gone so quickly.
So today we had booked "en famille" to visit the Blue Lagoon out on the Reykjanes peninsula, about an hour's drive from the capital. Created as a biproduct of the neighbouring geothermal power station, it is now perhaps the world's most famous spa.
It wasn't cheap at £70 per head, but not extortionate. Organised with precision, there were thankfully individual private showers and dressing rooms for those hung up about public nudity.
The pool is huge and though it can cater for 700 people, it didn't feel crowded. The kids spent ages taking photos of themselves. It is photogenic with lava flows surrounding the pool and the steam of the geothermal power station billowing in the distance. The dark, threatening clouds added to the atmosphere.
In our package a free drink was included (including beer, wine and fizz), a silica mak and an algae mask. There were saunas, a steam cave, body battering waterfall showers and mist sprays. We stayed about four hours and took lots of silly photos. Great fun!
Then we did a quick tour of the rest of the Reykjanes Peninsula - a geo park. First stop was the hissing geothermal field at Gunnuhver, where steam belted out and a bubbling, hissing spring leapt into the air. Nearby was one of the Peninsula's lighthouses at Valahnukur. The cliifs there are falling into the sea and noisy balck faced gulls ciircled overhead. Joan was excited as these were the cliffs and lava fields that feature in Take That's Patience video.
The final stop for the day was the Bridge between two continents. The Reykjanes Geopark lies on major plate boundaries along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Although 90% of this mountain range lies deep below the surface of the ocean, it rises above sea-level right on the Reykjanes Peninsula, making this one of the only places on earth where it is visible. (It also features in prementioned video.)
It was going dark again so we headed back to town and said a reluctant farewell to Philip, Penny, Billy, Christine and Stephanie. We had to be up at 4 am for our flight so a late night wasn't possible.
