Wednesday
It felt great to wake up Wednesday morning with Nick next to me. We had a lovely room at the hostel we were staying at Laksameenari Guest House which was just off Khao San Road. It provided towels, robes, our own fruit bowl, safe, hair dryer, TV, coffee and tea with a kettle and included breakfast - all things that I've not had the luxury of in most dorms even if Lauren and I had stayed in our own private rooms quite a lot this one was by far the best! We went and visited the Wat Pho temples in the morning - Lisa and Nicks first temple experience, I think they enjoyed it but I wasn't overly impressed. My favourite temple experience so far is still the zen meditation centre we visited in Vietnam. It quite a hot day and they were both still recovering from some jet lag so we were all keen to get back after lots of walking around.
Lisa had a rest and a lie down while Lauren, Nick and I decided to go find a massage place. Nick and Lauren went with a traditional Thai massage which meant they were put into thai clothes and went into a room to be pulled around while I enjoyed a nice deep oil massage in private. Afterwards we located Lisa and went for a walk for some lunch on Khao San road. Lisa didn't feel great so didn't stay out long and went back to mine and Nicks room for a lie down while me, Nick and Lauren went and did some shopping amongst the hustle and bustle of Khao San Road. I got a nice new bikini and a caftan and some sandals (my ones that got trashed and fixed in the storm in Hoi An are finally on their way out) and Nick had me barter for a belt for him. Being a salesman you'd think he'd be good at this himself but he insisted for me to do it for him! We got back to the room and checked on Lisa who was feeling poorly still and was upset because my grandad still hadn't been well from his fall. We calmed her down and decided to book to go see a drag show that evening. I got put in charge of making the call to the theatre and ended up having everyone in stitches when I was trying to spell out Lauren's name. The lady thought I was saying 'R' as the first letter of her name so I'd said, "No it's L for Lama!" Anyway they all found this hysterical as the phonetic alphabet is L for Leema I've now learnt. Just one of those moments where my common sense fails me.
We all then took some time to get ready and went to a little street food-type place around the corner for dinner. I had a Thai red curry which was so spicy it left my lips tingling still an hour later! We hopped in a taxi and went to the drag show called, "Mambo", and had a couple of beers and phoned home before going in. The show had lots of dazzling costumes and humour as well as simple miming to songs. Some of the dancing was really bad but I still found it entertaining, and also found it more entertaining that we'd stuck Nick on the end seat (bearing in mind we were on the second row) so he was on edge that he was going to get picked on to get up. Thankfully they took no for an answer during the show. However after the show, we came out and the dancers try and grab you for pictures, which we said no to as we know they make you pay but one of them even took my phone off me and insisted and then after they were demanding money. I took it light heartidly and took my phone back and still said no and we all tried to escape them clinging onto us - Nick had one of them shouting 100 baht at him which we were laughing about days later and thankfully we had no trouble from it - they weds doing it to everyone which was a shame because it spoilt our appreciation of the show.
We returned to Khao San Road and ordered a beer tower and sat outside people watching. A fight kicked off at one point and Nick found himself trying to protect the three of us and we moved from where we were sat out of the way. We then had a lady from Singapore, Sharon sit down next to us with her daughter and friends who were getting up dancing so she was joining chatting to us and kept trying to pour us more beer from her tower! Lisa and Lauren went to bed as Lisa felt a bit sick and Nick and I stuck around chatting to Sharon for a bit longer who was showing us her grandchildren and telling us about her toy boy husband. Sharon had a business that sold flowers to hotels in Singapore and said she came to Bangkok quite often for days away. She even got her sewing out at one point to show Nick and I what she likes to do in her spare time which was really sweet. When we left she walked up the street and tapped me and asked if we would be back tomorrow to keep her company for a drink, we said we'd try to and headed back to the room.
