Kershaw's European Vacation
We visited the Acropolis of Rhodes. This construction is an interesting mix of ancient and not quite as ancient. It consists of a fortress built by the Knights of St John, around 1309 AD but at the very top there is a temple to Athena Lindia which is much older. We climbed roughly 300 stairs up the the acropolis at Lindos and the views were spectacular. The Colossus of Rhodes, which I knew from the Jason and the Argonauts movies, did once exist and stood approx 40 m high but it did not stradle the harbour mouth. It only stood for56 years and was then toppled and sold for scrap. Sad :-(
