Wednesday 31st January
We head to Ayutthaya today. This was the capital city before Bangkok. It's beautiful here and a huge shame the Burmese raised it to the ground. It must have been stunning in it's time. We visited various sites around the city. At the first one we climbed the stupa whereupon hordes of thai schoolgirls proceeded to shyly say 'hello', 'you're beautiful' and 'i love you' to us before giggling behind their hands! Clearly that's the only english they speak.
One of the sites we visited has the head of a buddha statue growing within the vines of the tree. They believe that when the Burmese sacked the city, the head was chopped off and must have rolled to that spot and the tree grew up around it.
Finally we reached the temple with 3 very large impressive stupa. This was the palace and only royalty ashes can be interred within these walls. There are also no monks here as it would have been the equivalent of the royal home and solely reserved for them.
As we head back to the train station to leave for Chiang Mai, we notice the army wandering past with what are clearly handbags tucked under their shoulders. Hilarious!
The train has no locked compartments and no secure place for your baggage - thank goodness I packed padlocks!
