Hiroshima & Miyajima Island
Our next stop was Hiroshima, and although totally different to Kyoto, it was still a brilliant experience and definitely worth a visit. Our first day there we spent visiting the memorials and museums about the Atomic bomb. They were exceptionally sad and scary to imagine a whole city centre being turned to dust in less than 2 seconds. It also made us both very angry to learn more about the background to and the reasons behind the bombing....In 1943, the Americans, in conjuction with the British decided that the atomic bombs that they had been developing at a cost of $2bn needed
to be tested. Already in 1943, they picked Japan as the target as this country would be least equipped to recover technology and knowledge from what remained of the bomb......doesn´t sound like a great reason to me. However, the museum didn´t hide the atrocities that the Japanese committed during the war nor the fact that Hiroshima was as military town. This made it all the more credible and moving. Despite all the destruction and loss of live, it was great to see Hiroshima
rise up and become a great, thriving city again. It had really good shopping, bars and the food was excellent.
Our second day in Hiroshima we took a day trip to the nearby Miyajima Island, which has the floating orange Torii, one of the most photographed attractions in Japan. The town was lovely to stroll through and despite the showers,we managed to climb to the top of the 530m sacred mountain, Mt Misen. We got the cable car down though!
