After killing 5 hours in the Korean Airlines Prestige lounge at the Seoul Airport (Incheon), we boarded our flight for Tokyo, Japan. It was a quick 2-hour flight, but they still served us a hot meal of Shrimp stir-fry, cold tofu, pickled radishes (which we also had on the flight from Toronto to Seoul, and they are awesome!), and pineapple. Since we had stuffed ourselves in the lounge at the airport (not knowing if we would get food on the plane) and it was only 10 am in the morning it was a little odd but was still tasty.
We landed on time at Narita Airport and caught our Airport Limousine Bus to our hotel (The Shiba Park Hotel) in Tokyo.
The hotel is nice, room is clean and fairly roomy for what I had heard about rooms in Japan.
They ask that you return your room key when you leave the hotel, which seems a bit odd, but since it's an actual key I suppose they don't want it getting lost.
It was about 3 pm when we got checked in, so we decided to just go for a wander around the area that the hotel is in to get our bearings a little bit. After finding the Daimon subway station (which we knew we might need on Sunday) we wandered over and explored the Zojoji Temple and surrounding grounds. It was a beautiful temple, with a nice cemetery at the back of it. There were several families in the cemetery tending to the graves of their families.
Next, we walked through Shiba Park. We approached a heavily wooded area and having gotten some bug bites on the temple grounds, I decided to wait in the sun while Christine went to find the Maruyama burial mound, one of the largest in Tokyo. She found it, along with a whole bunch of bug bites.
From here, we decided to go and attempt to get our first meal in Japan.
After checking out lots of Japanese places, and noticing that very few of them had any sort of English menu, we realized that we didn't have any idea what the heck we were going to be eating. Christine had noticed a nice looking Chinese restaurant during our wanderings so we decided that since they had pictures of things that Christine recognized on the outside of the restaurant that in a pinch we could point to the pictures to make sure we got what we wanted. When we got back to the restaurant, it turned out that they did have an English menu, but one of the things that Christine wanted wasn't on there, so she had to take the very apologetic waiter outside to show him the items that she wanted.
Dinner was very tasty and left us extremely full, so we decided to call it a day and head back to the hotel, planning on updating our blog and then going to bed. Once we got back to the hotel, and sat down to relax for a minute, it became very clear that the blog wasn't getting updated and that sleep was coming very quickly, so after over 24 hours of traveling we crawled into bed and slept.
