We introduced Chileans to the holiday of Thanksgiving last week. Even though it was my first Thanksgiving not being with my family I didn't feel too sad. Mostly because it really didn't seem like Thanksgiving. I went to class, volunteered and went to the beach. Not your typical Thanksgiving day. But on Friday we had a dinner at the university with our host families, and professors. We all made a traditional food from our own families and introduced the Chileans to lots of new foods. I think they were most surprised by the stuffing, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. But overall they really enjoyed everything they tried. It was fun to get to teach them a tradition from our culture since we have spent so much time learning their traditions.
On Saturday some friends and I traveled to the world's largest pool. I know it sounds kind of lame and cheesy but it really was cool. The pool is over 1 km long and is 110 feet deep in the deepest parts. There are actual motor boats that drive on it, we went kayaking in it, and saw people sailing across it. It was crazy. Though at times seemed a little excessive considering the ocean was directly behind it. It costs billions of dollars each year to maintain and only the richest of rich people in South America can afford to stay there. (The photo above was taken from our hotel room.) So part of me felt a little guilty because it seemed so extravagent. But I still managed to have some fun :)
The resort was very nice and we had a really nice weekend even if we did get a little sunburned. It was a great way to finish off the semester spending a weekend with some of my closest friends here in Chile.
We only have two weeks left and I can't believe how fast the semester has gone by. The other UAI students are all finished with classes and are only at the university when they have finals, so the campus is pretty empty. It makes us really sad to think that we're all leaving soon, but we are thankful for the great semester that we've had here.
Even though we only have two weeks left in Vina, I still have over a month until I will be back in Minnesota and I am so excited for all the traveling I will be doing. I'm going to update my travel plan so that you can see where I'll be over the next month. I will try and update my blog when I can but there may only be two or three more posts in the next month.
I hope that you all had a great Thanksgiving and enjoy the rest of the holiday season. I'll see you in a month!
Love,
Katelyn
