Today was the epic journey from Cambodia back to Thailand and down to the island of Koh Chang. I was picked up by Tuk Tuk from my hostel at 7:15am, it was clearly going to be a day where I used every mode of transport possible.
The tuk tuk took me to the bus station and here the adventure really began. Ticket in hand I had no idea which bus I was meant to be getting on and was ushered on to a bus that I had no idea where it was going. I was sat next to a Cambodian lady who spoke very little English, she just stared and smiled at me. At 7:45 as the bus left I realised that I was the only westerner on the bus. The bus was pretty much full. As soon as the journey started the Cambodian lady opened her bags and started passing me all sorts of food and drinks. I signing for me to eat, this lady literally feed me for the first 2 hours of the journey. I couldn't even tell you what the stuff she was giving me was and although I really didn't want it and some of it was gross I smiled and tucked in to my gifts. Thankfully she also gave me a bottle of coke to wash it all down with.
The first stop for the bus was at a bakery, I wasn't quite sure what was going on as the whole bus emptied. It was like they all stopped to do their weekly shop. One by one they all got back on the bus with bags of bread and cakes. I got of the bus but brought nothing (something I later came to regret). Back on the bus and off we go again, about four hours in to the journey the bus stops again. This time it was clear we were stopping for lunch. I looked around at the big bowls of food that people were choosing from, it looked so bad I couldn't bring myself to eat any of it. This was when I wished I'd brought something at the bakery!! So a packet of crisps and a mango was my lunch.
Back on the bus and after about 2 hours further we stopped at Koh Kong. his is on the Cambodian/Thailand border. Most of the canbodian's had got off along the route and thankfully a few westerners had got on, not that any of us had a clue what was going on. T The bus is not allowed to cross the boarder so we all had to pile off the bus, walk up a dirt track to a hut, called Cambodian immigration. Here I was stamped out of the country, had my finger prints taken and was allowed to walk across the bridge to Thailand.
On the other-side of the bridge I filed in my arrival card, went to the Thai immigration hut and was stamped back in to Thailand for 30 days (only if I had 30 days left). I was then put on a minibus and driven to Trat port to get the boat to Koh Chang. The drive took about 1hr 30mins but it was a nice feeling being back in Thailand. We then were piled on to a boat and of we set to Koh Chang, the boat took about 45mins, I'd met an Australian guy on the bus who was travelling through South East Asia before heading back to live in Australia, he'd been living in London for that last 10 years. So we killed time by having a couple of bottles of Chang.
Once of the boat we were all piled back in to a mini bus, by now it's really dark. The whole day was spent travelling. It took about 45mins to get to the resort that we are staying at and I was the last one on the bus to get dropped off (typical). As I arrived I was met by the manager who told me my friend was waiting for me. It was so good to go up to my room and see Alicia, even if she is full of cold and not feeling well. Cynthia arrives tomorrow evening and poor Jo has had a disaster. She has been in hospital in Chiang Mai for the last two nights now, she's feeling better but does not know when she is going to be discharged or if she will even make it to Koh Chang. I feel so sorry for her.
Alicia and I went and had dinner we stayed at our resort (yes resort, not hostel!!) it is right on the beach so we had a romantic meal for 2 on the beach. The resort has a swimming pool too, this is going to be luxury. One week here before the reality of returning home.
