Yesterday morning we got up early, had b/fast, checked out of our hotel and then headed to the train station which was about a 10min walk from our hotel.Thank god the train station wasnt as busy as it was when we had a look the day before it was pretty huge and would have been very hard to get around with our suitcases had it been packed. We found our platform (there's 30 platforms) and as we had seat numbers we find to find which cart we were in etc. Along the way down the platform a lovely man gave us directions and then when the train arrived help us, and an American couple who were sitting next to us aboard and even carried my suitcase for me. Once aboard he helped put our suitcases on the shelves and direct us to our seat along with the American couple - what great service! After we'd sat down he started demanding 5 euro from us the other other couple.... hmm turns out he didnt work for the railway at all - he got us alright! The train was really nice, we were in 'first class' and along the way we had a chat to the couple sitting opposite us who were american and turns out the guy was a race car driver.
We arrived in Naples just over an hour later then had to navigate our way around that train station to find the local train to get us to Sorrento.. the second we got off the train we started to get hassled by little old men trying to 'help us to our train' - I dont think so Mr, not falling for that again! We found the local train we needed to catch which was quite different to the one we were just on - if anyones seen Sydney trains - these are about 10 x worse for graffitti etc! It was about a 1 hr trip until we arrived at Sorrento, caught a taxi to our hotel and checked in.
Lets just say this hotel was VERY different to our previous one! (Hotel Tramentano) It was very fancy and sitting right over the cliff looking out over the sea.Our room was about 3-4 times bigger then our one in Rome and has a great view up to the mountains and out to see - it was definately worth the extra money to stay here. The hotel is also quite famous for having many famous poets and writers stay here for inspiration including Shelley, Keates
After settling it was time for lunch and a wonder around, we found a little restaurant up a side street just near our hotel and had THE BEST pizza i've ever eaten in my life! The change of pace between Rome and Sorrento is amazing, its much more laid back and has a 'coastal' lifestyle here, also all the wait staff etc are much more friendlier here which is great.
We wandered around all the little streets which are exactly what you expect when you think of Italy. For dinner we found a restaurant just near our hotel and after dinner had to try Limonchello a lemon liquor very famous in this region (there are lemon trees EVERYWHERE in Sorrento). After dinner we wandered around the streets some more and then headed back to our hotel.. On the walk back to our hotel every restaurant or cafe we passed had all the locals and wait staff fixed on the TVs in each one - There was a football game on of course! As soon as we arrived back at the hotel there was fireworks that went off which we could watch from our window which were great.
