Faced with the prospect of a long series of chicken bus trips to get to our next destination we decided to see if we could convince someone to drive us directly. A helpful lady at a tour operator phoned around and managed to find someone who'd do it. Two hours in a taxi later we were deposited in Suchitoto, a small town to the north-east of the capital, San Salvador. The place is known as the culture capital of El Salvador, with plenty of art galleries and food markets on the weekend. Sadly we were there midweek so those were all closed, but we strolled around in the hot afternoon sun and ended up in the pool at a local hotel for a refreshing swim.
The owner of our hostel had told us about a free performance of the national philharmonic orchestra so we popped along that evening to take it in. I can't say I knew the music but it was proper good dramatic classical orchestra music which we enjoyed for a while before sneaking off to eat before the restaurants shut for the night.
Then it was a relatively early night as they next day was a serious travel day which demanded an early start. So while we didn't see much of Suchitoto we did chat to a few more locals and it becomes really apparent what an effect the recent civil war has had on this country. Ending in 1992, this 12-year war killed more than 75,000 people and more than 300,000 fled the country to live elsewhere. The Salvadorans are working hard to rebuild their country, but it's going to take some time yet.
Onwards to Honduras!
