We had a quick one night stop over in Puerto Viejo. The shuttle bus which brought us over the border said they'd drop us off at our lodgings, which was handy as it turned out we were about twenty minutes out of town along a small dirt road. We had to leave the bus and walk the remaining 400 metres because the road from there on was marked 4x4 only. So it was with some trepidation that we rang the bell, to be met by a cool German character (named Ken, go figure) who was very keen on permaculture and alternative energy. Had we been staying longer he'd have taken us on a 2.5 hour hike around the property showing us what he's managed to put together. I got the feeling he was a bit sad that we were only there for one night, I think most of the time he gets student groups who really want to learn about this sort of thing. In any case, he didn't have any food or drink to sell us so we bundled into a taxi which he called for us and headed back to civilisation.
We wandered around the town of Puerto Viejo for a few hours, mostly watching the sunset and trying to find a place to eat, eventually ending up at a nice tapas place where they made some incredibly good cocktails Suitably refreshed, we got the same taxi home again and went to sleep, only to be woken up by snoring, people arriving late with their noisy suitcases and a stupid cockerel that decided to crow all night. We had to be up early for the shuttle over the border so after a hurried breakfast Ken ferried is to the main road where we awaited the shuttle. At least the border crossing felt real this time - proper stamps in the passport on exit and then a long hot dusty walk over a rickety disused railway bridge and we were in Panama!
