So after a 3.5 hour boat trip from southern Mexico we pulled into Caye Caulker, a small Belizean island in the Caribbean sea (so small it won't even pick it up as a place on this blog....San Pedro is another island!). The sun had already set but I knew I loved this place already as from the boat all I could see were lots of fairy lights on small bars and restaurants lining the water's edge (I love a good fairy light, as you might have worked out from our wedding!). We made our way to our home for the next 3 days and the aptly named Sophie's, to dump our bags before heading out for a couple of beers and supper. After the guacamole and taco/nacho/enchilada Mexican week I was really looking forward to having lots of fish in Belize which I was told was amazing. So I ordered crab which I then proceeded to have to beat the crap out of with a hammer which slightly ruined the chilled out atmosphere of the lovely little restaurant and also drowned out the guitarist. However I did create a great talking point for the Aussie girls next to us about worst things to order on a first date.
Next day we were like kids opening our shutters to look at the beautiful blue sky and bright turquoise water. We seriously had woken up in paradise....oh except for the fecking dogs next door that bark at 7am every morning (another mum-ism for anyone who remembers our old next door neighbours and mum's obsession with their fecking dogs!). First thing we decided to do was check the whole island out by walking around the circumference (which sounds very impressive but it's only about 5 miles long and less than a mile wide so only took us about 2.5 hours). Caye Caulker is home to about 3000 people and no cars (just bikes and a few golf carts riding around on the dirt paths) and is an incredibly chilled out place with lots of signs saying 'Go Slow'. It was great to take in the entire island on our walk and head to the remote south where there is little more than the air strip, mangroves and jetties out to the sea. We really were on our own for a lot of it. There was a big old sign as we reached the most southern part which said "path frequently under water" but luckily it wasn't so we could continue on our way. What we hadn't really thought about was the fact that if its frequently under water it probably means when it's not there is thick deep mud instead. Our stubbornness not to turn around kicked in though and we continued.....flicking mud all up ourselves (we honestly looked liked we had diarrhoea at the end!) and Keith breaking his Havianas before then walking barefoot.
That afternoon we headed to where most people hang out, the Split. A narrow channel splits Caye Caulker into two islands (caused by a hurricane in the 1960's) and at the split is where everyone hangs out sunbathing, swimming and drinking at the Lazy Lizard bar (and where Keith wrote the last blog post). We then returned to Sophie's to make a quick rum and diet coke to take out to sit on the dock for a gorgeous sunset. A great meal of lobster on the BBQ at Wish Willy's finished off an awesome day.
The next day Keith went diving and I repeated the winning formula of going to the Split and reading Bridget Jones! It's here where I also found out from Mel that Sambo had started walking (I bloody knew he'd do it as soon as we left the country)! Keith joined me about 2pm and filled me in on his 2 dives where he swam with reef sharks, sting rays and turtles. Sounded incredible. Another stunning sunset before we headed to the island's outside cinema where we lounged on an outside couch, ate pizza, drank wine and watched 'The Theory of Everything' under the stars (great film btw!).
So that takes me to today where it's been a little stormy (huge thunderstorm this morning) so involved a bit of sunbathing, lots of napping and quite a bit of eating! We're catching a catamaran tomorrow to head down the coast of Belize over the next 3 days, which I'm looking forward to (just hoping for not too much rain....some forecast but fingers crossed!). Anyway will hand over to Mr L to update you on that in a couple of days!
Big love
