For my trip around Rajasthan, I booked a six day tour with a travel agent as I did not have much time to hunt for accommodation or sort train journeys.
My train from Delhi to Jaisalmer was seventeen hours. Having booked my tour, I thought all my train worries would be non-existent. How wrong I was.
A few hours before my train was due to depart, I got a phone call from the travel agent telling me that my sleeper seat has not been confirmed. I had to hunt for a new ticket with a guy from the travel office at the station. Despite our best efforts, I could not reserve a seat.
I boarded the packed train and a family kindly allowed me to perch on the end of one of their berths for the journey. The first few hours were ok but as night fell the nightmare began.
I pleaded with the train conductor to help me find a berth and no amount of rupees would get his attention. Even the train company was conspiring against me. Having no berth to lie down on, I had a sleepless seventeen hours on a cramped train to Jaisalmer. To say I was annoyed was a huge understatement. I just hoped my desert camel safari would all be worth it.
