Hey guys,
So we have made it to Beijing!!
My day on Wednesday started early as the last bus from my hotel to the airport was at 10.30am. *Note: Being at the airport 6 hours before your flight is waaaayyyy too early. Eventually the other China vols started to arrive and we got checked in. All...except one. I shall not name this individual, but they did not make it onto the flight to Beijing. We learnt that their flight from Scotland had been delayed and so they missed the check-in cut-off time. They managed to get on the flights behind us and so met us at Beijing Airport an hour after we landed.
I also had a slight panic at Hong Kong International Airport ... I lost my passport! Being the clever cookie that I am, I put it down, then forgot I had put it down and walked away from it. On suddenly realising I didn't have it, I went straight back, but it was already gone. Panic descended and I feared I was to get stuck in Hong Kong Airport, and then miss out on the year I have been preparing for. Luckily, Laura heard an announcement over the tannoy system and we discovered that my passport (with my boarding passes) had been handed into customer services. Panic over, I did not let go of my passport again until I handed it to Mike at Beijing Airport!
The flights themselves were no different from any other I have ever been on (and airports look very, very similar (see pic)). The flight from Heathrow to Hong Kong was 11 and a half hours, and then from Hong Kong to Beijing was 3 and a half hours. Our first flight was delayed 40 minutes, but we managed to make up the time in the air, but our second flight was delayed an hour.
Mike (our PT rep) is lovely, and he met us in Beijing Airport.
Then on the bus to the hostel, he outlined our plans for the 9 days that we are to spend in Beijing. I am really looking forward to spending the time with the other China vols before we are split up and head off to our separate projects. With such a jam packed week, I should probably head to get some sleep now.
So until next time,
Zàijiàn x
