We caught the local bus back into town, went to confirm our tickets on Inca Rail to Machu Picchu and booked our bus tickets to Arequipa. We decided to visit the San Pedro market to kill time before leaving to catch our train. It is a market that is highly recommended for tourists to visit. What a sight to behold. So much colour and hustling and bustling. It is an enormous market with butchers, bakers, take-aways, sit downs, tourist tat, green grocers, etc, etc all shouting their wares at the tops of their voices. Graeme and I were going to find something to eat there, but were so overwhelmed that we ended up just taking photographs and moving out of there.
On the way from there, we were caught in a pedestrian traffic jam on a street corner and had quinoa or something similar sprayed over us, which literally brought the entire crowd to a standstill for a good 30 seconds!!!! Then there was a whole lot of spluttering and exclaiming and we all moved on again. We made our way to the taxis who would take us on to the station to catch the train. Lots of haggling again about prices...... we sat down in the taxi and Graeme reached for his phone.....it was gone. He rushed off to all the places we stopped at, needless to say in a fruitless attempt to find it. I believe it disappeared during the pedestrian traffic jam. Stress levels mounted to soaring highs, but there was nothing to do but move on.
We had missed our original taxi ride due to Graeme's hunt for his phone, so the whole process started again. Eventually shared a taxi with two young men from South Korea who really felt Graeme's pain and sympathised wholeheartedly with his distress. The train ride was great with some stunning scenery on the way. We arrived safe and sound and duly went to find a hostel in which to sleep for the night.
