Bienvenido a Espana
Granada, Spain
Well, i'm here.
in fact, i've been here for a whole 11 days without writing on here. Mainly because i've been pretty busy, but more likely that i'm trying to convince myself that i'm not actually here, in spain. Alone. Forever. But at least i'm not dramatic.
So, since i've been here i've actually made some friends. Mostly english, yes, but lovely just the same. Apparently it's instinctive to flock to those you can communicate with best, and at the moment i do not need to be struggling my way through spanish whilst feeling as homesick as i do. I say homesick, i mean im just completely gutted to be missing out on what's going on back in norwich and i possibly miss Aaron. Possibly. We've arranged to see each other every four weeks, so only 2 and a half to go, not that i'm counting.
Apart from being generally woeful and pathetic, i've done lots of stuff. i've been out pretty much every night, been for tapas a few times, experienced the gropey spanish nightlife. Apparently it's acceptable here to grab women around their waist and demand they speak to you. Vile. Tonight we cooked our first meal, Rachel and I. I have a scottish, northern irish and german flatmate. Poor german Joliene, i think she's not very keen on us speaking english all the time and she can barely understand Rachel, which is hilarious. When Rachel speaks, she leans forward and has such a look of confusion/disgust on her face.
In terms of uni, i started yesterday and it was an absolute nightmare. The day started well when i arrived at the right bus stop at 7.50 am sharp and started speaking to a lovely spanish girl. However, it was around this time that a policeman approached and told us that there would be no more buses down this road; the road was closed. The spanish girl, whose name i've forgotten, took me to the next bus stop, which was about 20 minutes away. By this time, my lesson had already started but i decided resolutely that i would make it to my first day of university, that i would not slack this year. So as the massively overcrowded bus number 8 pulled up to the curb i thought to myself, come on Katie, be spanish. So i pushed and i pushed and i got onto the bus. Triumphant, i stood in the doorway counting my change when the bus driver stood up and said 'no hay espacio' and without waiting closed the doors. On me. More specifically my foot. Was i dignified? No. Did i scream, fall backwards and lose my shoe? Yes i did. Even worse than standing on the pavement with one shoe off and 50 people witnessing my humiliation was the fact that i may not have been on the bus, but the bag i was still wearing was. At this point i had no idea what to do and as the bus pulled away, i would honestly have let my bag go had a nice spanish boy not intervened and hammered furiously on the door until the driver opened it. Not the best start to the day. I finally made it to university however, but unfortunately my lecturer didn't make the effort. So feeling thoroughly deflated, i met up with my numerous friends and we went to two lectures together, neither of which i could follow. I don't even know what they were about. At the moment, i'm supposed to go to the classes that sound good to me whilst i wait to receive my student card, which i have yet to fill out the paperwork for. As they say in spain, manyana manyana. There is no country that is more laid back than spain, it's truly ridiculous.
So after my traumatic 10 hour long day, i wasnt looking forward to going back to say the least. But i decided to anyway. I know, you're impressed aren't you. Unfortunately, my bus didn't show up so me and Tiernan went for a drink, got some ice cream and did a bit of clothes shopping. Aren't i naughty. It was a pretty good day though, and it's lovely to have Rachel here after waiting nine days for her to show up. It's also lovely to have someone here who is less settled and more homesick than i am. However, she'll be seeing her boyfriend every two weeks, double the time i'll see Aaron :(. Joliene currently has her boyfriend here for THREE weeks. In the room next door. I couldn't be any more jealous. If i hear one more giggle...
But yeah, i think that pretty much sums up my first week and a half here; I've made some lovely friends (sam, ed, chloe, rosie, rachel, joliene, dominique, tiernan, sabrina etc), i've got a tan and im in a beautiful city, despite its constant street fiestas, bin emptying at 3am, shouting, singing, loud mopeds at all hours, overwhelming heat and large amount of spaniards. Welcome to Granada, the party city. When in spain eh...
