Day 212
The in-laws have arrived and Rufus celebrated their first evening by getting horrendously pissed and offending everyone. Up early the next day for breakfast and some humble apologies. We've put it down to nerves and excitement. Gill and Ronnie are pretty game and are up for most things - happily squashing themselves into tuk-tuks and promenade-front cafes. Had a lovely river cruise up/down the Mekong Delta and checked into a lovely boutique hotel - the 252 - best hotel in PP, and a place clearly heavily advertised in Fodor's Pink Guide to the World's Gayest Hotels, Like Ever. We can't move for poncey French men and tattooed lezzers. It is a fabulous, joyous place. Did the Royal Palace which was highly dull but one of these things you just have to do. The girls have made friends with a delightful pair called Rosie and Scarlett who are also out of school and travelling the world with their parents. I'm jealous that they actually had the money to circumnavigate the entire globe - making our own paltry achievements pale in comparison. We only managed India, Nepal and South East Asia. Pathetic. So we have family here, and we have friends. Could not be happier. Casually googled 'social work jobs in Cambodia' and found my dream job - a Child Protection advisor for UNICEF - good salary, good conditions. This has upset me greatly - I often have wild dreams but more often than not, I can't realise them due to their own unavailability or my own responsibilities. I would much rather there were no suitable jobs here and then my decisions could be made for me. Anyway, I know nothing about child protection, giving advice, or UNICE so probably wouldn't be their strongest candidate. Maybe one day I will return and live and work and contribute to this amazing country. Preferably to work as a volunteer for the Maddox-Jolie-Pitt Foundation - which really does exist! Either that or run a gay beach bar and bakery on bamboo stilts, another unlived dream.
Clover keeps having her bum felt by kindly older women - we're not sure why. Something about the shape and cuteness of her bum I assume. She's taking it well. We're also amazed at the amount of women and children walking about in pyjamas, and I mean real, light cotton Hello Kitty or Winnie the Pooh jammies. We can only hazard a guess - cool, cheap, functional clothes? It is funny. Fine for Cambodia, not acceptable for Tesco's in Silverburn.
Collected my tailor made dresses today and can barely squeeze into them. How can I have put on half a stone in 3 days? Am fuming. I blame my brand new 38 year old metabolism. Happy Birthday to Me!
