Black Water Rafting yesterday was AWESOME!
Got picked up from the hostel at 7.45am and went to the centre the group had 7 people 5 girls and 2 guys! I have again written a stupidly long description, 7 pages in my journal so will be summarising again for you! However I dont think I can skimp on my description of what I had to wear! I think this must have been the most attracctive I have ever felt in my life! The outfit consited of - a full length tank topped wetsuit, a wetsuit jacket, little wetsuit socks, white smurf boots which were basically short white wellies with sliths down the front, then over the top of this a VERY attractive pair of shorts with a hole in the crotch and an abseilling harness! To top this all off girls with long hair had to have this stupid balaclava thing (basically a sock with a hole for your face) to stop hair getting caught!
Started off practicing abselling down a hill - had a race I won my "heat" but came second in the final because I was fumbling getting my rop off at the end! Turned out the actual 40 metre absail was down a rather small hole - at one point only just big enough for me to fit through! "Hanging around"in my harness at the top I couldn't see the bottom! After scrambling through some caves we came to a wire platform over a pretty deep hole, we had to switch off our lights and went down a zip wire in pitch black - a good way to see some glow worms! At the end of the wire I didn't hit solid ground and was left "hanging around" again! - I can assure you that in a harness this is not the most comfortable of experiences! To get off the zip wire I had to grab the wire and lift myself to unhook - with zero upper body strenght and wearing a heavy wetsuit this wasn't easy! After all this excitement we stopped for tea and flapjack - very civilised in a cave 40m below the ground! Now we got rubber (well thicker than rubber...)rings and had to jump off a wall about a 4metre drop into water - I had to jump up out and stick my legs out with the ring behind me so that I would land right!
Did some chilled out floating through glow worm caves and got pulled along in a chain while we all sang "In the jungle" from Lion King. And then the activity started again - head first down a slide - meaning a FACE FULL of freezing cold water and then climbing up two 10 metre waterfalls through some more pretty tight holes we finally made it back to the outside world. This was one of the most awesome things I have ever done and totally not what I expected - although I am not sure what I did expect.....
Then it was straight on the bus to make my way down to Taupo, before going to the hostel we stopped at a place called Huka Falls - a waterfall that pushes through enough water every minute to fill an olympic sized swimming pool! The water was crystal clear blue and bright white! At the hostel I am on a top bunk - AGAIN! the novelty that top bunks used to be when I was younger has totally worn off and they are just a bit of a pain now!
Today I spent alot of time waiting around - I was supposed to be sky diving at 10am but that got pushed back until 3 and then when 3 came it was cancelled because of the weather and I am now on a waiting list to jump at 7am tomorrow! This afternoon a bunch of us from the bus headed up to a waterfall which comes from a hot spring - consequently creating more natural hot pools. They were too hot so I didn't stay in for long but they were in beautiful surroundings, some more stunning views!
Did you know that I am 11692 air miles from London, England!
