Yesterday we were staying at a "Kiwi Experience Unique Stop" called the Pu Pub at Lake Manihapua and it is tradition at this stop for the whole bus to attend the fancy dress Pu Party! Our theme for the evening was "Tarzan and Jane with Bin Liners" On the way to Manihapua we went on three short walks one along a coast path with beautiful views, one down a track where there was a kiwi family who obviously weren't impressed that they had a whole bus full of backpackers dowing a walk at the same time as them and the Grandma sent the little kid at me and Charlie, who happened to be at the back of the group, on his bike! The 3rd walk wa past rocks that looked like staks of pancakes and blow holes where waves came in and then were forced out through holes in the rocks and sent spray everywhere!
We then stopped at a Warehouse "Where Everyone Gets a Bargain" to get fancy dress supplies somehow brown and black bin bags and a green khaki top was going to transform itself into a pretty impressive $6 costume!!!! Everyone got very creative and all the costumes looked so fab! Had a really really great evening in this pub in the middle of nowhere with the oldest publican in the country - Les - one barmaid and a dukebox!
This morning after leaving the Pu Pub we headed for the Bushmans Centre - a deer museum, YES it is ias exciting as it sounds! We paid $4 to sit in a FREEZING cold barn, watch a dvd about how crazy kiwi farmers used to jump out of helicopters onto wild deer to catch them and farm them, see some sleeping. hiding possums and a sleeping/dead pig! Back on the bus driving through some more beautiful little towns and past snow capped mountains. Arrived in Franz Josef - Glacier Hike tomorrow!!!!
Did you know - The Pacific Tectonic plate is moving in a South Westerly direction at the same rate as your fingernail grows, this movement is what causes the Southern Alps!
