so kendall wants me to write a journal entry, so here it goes.
greece was an adeventure....literally. i loved athens, which is the only place i got to see. i went with several girls from my program. we all wanted to do different things, and so we only got to see athens. i missed the sea, and i am very disappointed and sad.
the acropolis is incredible, as is the agora. great views of the city, great history. there was this one street on the way to the acropolis and it was the shopping street. it was so hard not to stop and buy stuff. there were so many shoes too! we ventured over to the meat market, which was quite a site to see. i've never seen that many carcasses in my life. i kind of wanted to buy some, but i don't speak any greek, nor did i have a place to cook it. oh well. we then ventured to the flea market, which is not your usual flea market. it was pretty cool. we met this guy there who went to michigan state for undergrad to wrestle and he got his masters in sports medicine. but he had to go back to greece b/c his parents own a shop. i bought a lot of stuff at the flea market. but don't worry, most of it isn't for me! haha. so then we checked out the changing of the guard at the greek parliament building. pretty sweet. they do this crazy foot thing where there are stomping out 400 years of turkish rule. the skirts the men wear have 400 ruffles. it was a site to see. they also had guards like this at the residence of the president, whose house used to be a palace. the national gardens are gorgeous and there is a little zoo in it w/ donkeys, ducks, goats, and roosters.
the food was amazing. so good. feta, gyros, moussaka, baklava, olives. yummm. so one night, some of the other girls met some old guys (think 40s) at the hostel and asked them where we should eat. well, we all thought they were going to show us where to go, but they ate with us. kind of weird. and sketchy. we went out to a greek bar/restaurant where we met avrilis, who talks like he should be playing basketball. no joke. his english was that good. it was funny. he tried to be pimp. his dad is american, so his english was good to begin w/. then one night, i don't remember which night, some stray dogs that live in syntagma square walked us home to the hostel. it was funny. the greeks can't stand the dogs.
the greek people were extremely friendly. they were amazing. the men were great to look out. different than italian men, for sure. they are a lot taller, not as skinny, not as hairy, not as sketchy, and a lot of them have blue eyes. I wouldn't mind staying for a semester in Athens, that's for sure. haha. but the people were incredible. as was the metro, which was so clean. it was the cleanest and nicest metro i have ever been on, and that inlcudes the one in vienna.
the hostel was sketchy. i knew i wasn't a hostel person to begin with, but there is no way i will ever stay in one again. we didn't have heat (we would have had to pay 15 euros), but then we got a small space heater. there was no hot water for a shower, and the showers were sketchy themselves. i just felt gross. oh, and the hostel said it had breakfast. well breakfast was bread, jam, butter, and coffee or tea. breakfast was a lie. so ash and i went and got omlettes from a sweet little greek woman.
i enjoyed athens. there is a lot of stuff that happened that i will not write here that made it stressful and less enjoyable. but it's a great place to visit.
