Was finally dropped off at Singapore bus station after a boring 5 hour bus journey and an interesting run in with customs officer. After getting my head around yet another MRT timetable, I arrived safe and sound at my new hostel that I would be gracing my presence for 4 nights.
The hostel was amazing and one of the best I've been in so far. It even had choc spread for chocolate and banana sandwiches. Perfect. Twenty four beds to a dorm now which meant an even bigger chorus of snorers and even a sleep talker which provided the night time entertainment. I met up with a few friends at the entrance of the hostel which only meant more drinks despite the sore head from the night before.
Next say we were up nice and early for the singapore tour which consisted of wandering around, trying not to get lost and marvelling at the unusually shaped skyscrapers that formed singapores skyline. Some of these builders were stunning, some were ugly and offensive looking, but it was easy to say all were breathtaking. Chicken and rice was the themed meal of the day. Sounds simple and boring but it was anything but. In fact it's making me hungry just writing about it. After sunset we made our way up the Swiss Hotel (very very posh) to the top floor to see the spectacular view of Singapore at night. Even I got a touch of vertigo and I have no problems with heights. I could've stayed up there all night but that would mean either being chucked out by the bouncers built like brick s*** houses or having to eventually buy a drink in the bar which you would need a mortgage to buy.
The next day was a chilled one mostly because it would not stop bloody raining. Wandered around a few malls, ate yet more food, nothing too interesting. A friend convinced me to visit Vietnam for the week leading up to my flight to australia as it was much cheaper and less boring than staying in Singapore for 7days. So I trekked to the Vietnam embassy to get my visa, a journey far more complicated than I originally thought. The weather that night though took a turn for the better and we headed to the night safari. The prospect of trying to spot well camouflaged animals in the dark bewildered me at first but when we got there I discovered that it was well organised and you saw every animal there was to see (partly because they were just being fed and partly because they're enclosures were the size of my living room). Even the animal show was pretty good, including undisciplined hyenas, otters picking up litter, and a three year old girl almost being mauled by a monkey.
Day 3 in singapore and I set off early to collect my stamped passport from the grumpy officer who probably hadn't had sex in the last year and hopped on the tube to...deep breath...UNIVERSAL STUDIOS!!!! Wooooo!!! I was excited as you could probably tell. It was on a small island at the most southern point of singapore and it opened less than a year ago. It turned out, despite my enthusiasm, to be a bit of a disappointment. It was a lot smaller than I imagined and half the rides, mostly the roller-coasters, were still being tested. There were several different themed areas including madagascar, far far away (from shrek) and jurassic park. Wandering around the park itself was the best part, as the scenes and props were amazing. The walking around and experiencing the shows and role plays, however, was short lived because it rained. And rained. And rained some more. That day put the word 'pour' in singapore. Walking around a soggy sandals was not what I had planned that day but overall it was a fun day out and it took up the day. Like a child that had too much stimulation and sweets in one day, I crashed out early and was in bed by 10, just to realise that I couldn't sleep anyway because I was waaaaay too excited about Vietnam the next day.
