The end of our van trip was slightly emotional as we'd become rather attached to the camper that had done us proud for over four months.
We enjoyed a variety of sights in Morocco and Chris got to enjoy some time on his new surf board at last in Immessouane. We followed the rain south for a while but finally caught up with the hot African sun and had some tasty barbecues and time on the beach. I got back in the water in Taghazout and hd my best surf session yet. I called it day as the sun set as I didn't want to jinx any future sessions!
We had a couple of days in Marrakech which was so lively and interesting. The 'square of the dead' was like something out of the dark ages with people selling teeth, snake charming, and performing plays, and most of it is for the locals not the tourists which was fantastic. We had a look around all of the souks selling various goods, but pretty much relaxed for our time there, enjoying tasty fresh mint tea and orange juice.
The van made it through some difficult roads in the Atlas mountains and we enjoyed a bonfire with views through the immense valleys. Visited the ski resort there but it was too early for much sno sadly. We did walk through some reaching the summit of Jebel Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa, which provided stunning views of the desert below and the vast ranges.
Every drive is interesting with goats in trees, cows and camels crossing the roads, and donkeys riding their owners and heavy loads alongside you. We spent a lovely few days in cosmopolitan Essaouira which is a great place to get a taste for Morocco. It's a pretty walled medina with mini souks and some lovely restaurants and bars.
Checked into a hotel in Agadir for a little luxury. We had a huge apartment style room for a very good price so made the most of relaxing there for a few days. The entertainment was slightly dubious so we ventured out for an evening for Steve's birthday. The mexican restaurant we chose to go to had recently decided to stop serving alcohol despite being a tourist place, so our meal was pretty quick then we went to another bar to celebrate properly!
Morocco is a diverse and interesting country, and one well worth a visit. It has great countryside and beaches, and lively different sights to see.
