Finally left Sydney and hopefully the rain...It was still pouring down when we left but thankfully we were picked up outside the hostel by our new Oz driver Steady. We left Sydney to make our way to 'surf camp' in Awarrawa. On the way we stopped of in Port Maquarie to have the best chips I have had in ages! A lovely port and the sun was shining! After our lunch we made our way to this bizarre surf 'museum' more like a shack with some surf memorabilia on the wall, but apparantely it was owned by a famous surfer. After having our picture taken under a plastic wave we made our way to Spot X the place we was going to learn to surf. The camp was really nice and was complete with a fire. We spent the evening around the camp fire just talking and chilling before getting ready for our lesson the next morning. I saw a possom for the first time- they are soo cute!
The following morning we were woken up at 7o'clock to have breakfast before putting on our wetsuits ready to start the lesson. We partnered up and carried our boards to the beach- that was a mission to begin with! The route to the beach was waterlogged so we had to wade through knee high cold water to even reach the sand and to top it all I could barely carry the board! We learnt the basics of surfing on the sand before venturing to the sea. The lesson was good fun- apart from the fact I could barely lift the board as it was so heavy. Managed to half stand up a few times before falling off not so fun as you feel like you are under water forever. Finished the lesson & walked back through the muddy filled area & had a well deserved shower. Had lots of fun learning how to surf but I don't think its naturally my sport...
Arber:
When we boarded the bus its was raining stupidly the bus leaked and we had a bucket collecting water inside the bus!!! My lights above me filled with water which is an electric hazard if i ever saw one but our driver was great a man called steady!!
In Maquarie I was recommended sweet chilli sauce and wedges and they didnt dissapoint!!
The bizzare museum also had for no reason a densits chair!!! and the dude showing us around was 50 and still surfs every day this was also the first time i spotted the southern cross which was cool!!
The day started off perfectly, we saw dolphins from a distance riding the waves!! The water we walked through was hip height actually and freezing cold and being as i was first i was kind enough to locate all the underwater logs by screaming in pain as i hit them - im nice like that- the "surf" was uncharecteristically big and a few of us tried the bigger waves but as we all got wiped out soon no-one ventured too deep!! Surfing was heaps of fun and Katie tried really hard the board is a clear 6ft taller than she was im suprised she never gave up!!
Got loads of surf photos but none with Katie in them as we had to pay double to get a few of her on the cd i bought turns out chilled out surfers are more capatalistic then you would think!! - Will upload soon!!
