This morning began in Amsterdam and we had about 3 hours free time in the city. Breakfast was another buffet style from the hotel and was perfect to start the morning with, especially when you get Danish pastries :)
Anne Frank's house was first on the list. This was a great place to visit, particularly after being to Berlin and learning more about the Nazi's what they did to Jews. Did this in an hour, then went to a pancake house. Shared an apple pancake with Myfy and it was very nice. It is important to taste the local cuisine. Which by the way, Amsterdam have the tastiest cheese sticks! The plan was to go shopping after but as it was a Sunday, shops didn't open till 12 (grr) so got some souvenirs from a shop and took some photos of the city, but not much as it was sadly a rainy day.
Would have experienced another local flavour but after a big night out, the body said no. Another reason to come back to Amsterdam ;)
So another long bus ride from 12.30pm till 6pm to get to St Goar in Germany. One observation of the German scenery is there is a lot of trees. I'd like to see it in summer when they have leaves on then as at the moment they are bare and look very sad. Also, along the Rhine, it is fairly mountainous and reminds me of New Zealand somewhat.
After dinner we had a wine tasting. This was in a 17th century wine cellar and it still had a 17th century feel to it. We had 4 sweet wines (all very very nice) then we could try the ice wine. This is a special wine and is harvested from frozen grapes and at temperatures below 30 degrees Celsius. So this doesn't happen every year. A bottle is the equivalent of 8 bottles of normal wine, in terms of grapes required. Ended up buying two. Here's hoping one males to be a good investment! The other is to be enjoyed at a special occasion.
The rest of the evening was spent in good company with alcohol in hand. A nice easy night to socialise and get to know the group some more. I can say I'm glad you can't smoke indoors in New Zealand though. That's one thing I won't miss about Germany!
