We pulled into Palermo this morning. The town looked pretty as we cruised in. But the Port was not attractive at all! We had an early morning shore excursion so both r&l and g&k had breakfast in our rooms, thanks to room service! Boy is it going to be hard to get back to reality in a few weeks!
This is the one port where we were sure we wanted to take an organized tour because all the guidebooks mention Palermo being dangerous...you know, the mafia and all!...yikes!
We elected to take a bus tour to the town of Cefalu. It was about a one hour bus ride to get there and we were happy to see that the 2 gay guys we had met last night at the martini bar were on our bus! Lenore and I have decided that we want to be friends with these guys! And then we want to join their dinner table...we would like to dump the 4 Canadians that are at our current table! Actually the two canadian guys are kind of funny...but one of the women never says a word and the other one is a know it all wine snob who lectures us on just about every topic. I thought Gary's head was going to explode the first night when she shared an after dinner cheese plate with him!! (And I think the waiter was ready to push her over board as well!) But still, the 2 guys working their way through the speciality martini menu will be more fun, you have to agree!! Stay tuned to see if Lenore and I can orchestrate this move!
Anyway, back to our excursion...this little town of Cefalo is where the movie "il Postino" was filmed! Sticking to one of my golden rules ("you must eat gelato every day you are in Italy") I sampled the strawberry gelato ...it was the best yet! The town was adorable...right on the coast...and postcard perfect! We all agreed that we needed more time in this cute little spot, but in order to keep the town from being over run by tourists, there is a limit to how long the bus can stay there. It's an effective way to control the crowds, but still left us wanting more time there!
