First of all I should probably apologise for taking so long to write a blog post. I have been really busy with school and it is definitely more difficult when you don't have electricity for over 2 months.... (thankfully we have it back now).
Lots has happened since I last wrote a blog but I'm going to keep it as short as possible, so here it goes.
We had to go out of the country to renew our visas, so at the start of December we took a trip to Rwanda. It is much more developed than Uganda and we noticed that as soon as we got to Kigali, the capital. There are proper roads, one person per seat in a car, one person on a boda and you have to wear a helmet, less people begging etc etc etc
Whilst we were in Kigali, we went to the genocide memorial museum, which although very interesting, was really really depressing, as you can imagine. I think it was important to go though, and the museum was really well done. Then we went to a small town at the edge of Lake Kivu, which was absolutely stunning and much cheaper than Kigali. We even went on a short boat trip. The views were honestly beautiful. Then it was back home on the night bus from kigali to kampala, then, a bus to Kaihura the next day.
After a couple of weeks back at our house, we headed to jinja to do some white water rafting, which was amazing. The rapids were grade 5 and our boat flipped twice. I also managed to break/dislocate my little toe. It went a lovely colour and was rather swollen for a few weeks, but it did get better. Now it just looks wonky...
Then it was on to the Sesse Islands for Christmas, which although the hotel wasn't the nicest, especially for the money we paid, it was still lovely. We spent Christmas day on the beach. :)
After that, it was back home to spend New Year in Fort Portal, which was a good night and we even saw a couple of fireworks.
We spent a few more weeks at home before we headed back to school. I was really looking forward to teaching again, but a bit nervous about my new class (they move up classes at Christmas in Uganda). But after a week or so, I got to know them and everything is going well. The kids are as funny and cheeky as ever. I still think some of the kids are convinced that I am from America, even though I have explained that I am from the UK and shown them the UK and America on a map. I got some funny questions after Project Trust's visit. Tom (our assistant desk officer) came up to my school and watched one of my lessons. A few days later, one of the kids asked "madam, where is your brother?" whilst pointing outside to where we had been sitting. So I said, he is not my brother, he works for Project Trust. Then I got "ah, he is your father." So I said, No, no, he works for Project Trust, like I do. Then I got "ah, he is your husband." So I said, No!! no, he is not my husband. He is my friend. "Ok madam, but where is he?" He is at home, I said, in Scotland. "When is he coming?" He is not, I said. "Ehh!! Maawe, madam, he is deceiving us. He said see you soon." I didn't really know what to say to that.
This term, I've also started teaching them art, music and P.E. which is always fun, if not a bit hectic. They love the art lessons and I normally end up doing it with kids in the other classes too. They bring me some paper from their books and ask me to show them how to make whatever (a paper airplane or a paper chain of men etc.).
We still go to the orphanage every week or so, which is always lots of fun. We even bathed and dressed babies a couple of weeks ago. Some weren't too happy about it though....
I finished term 1 two weeks ago now so I am on holiday. I got another two weeks off before I'm back to school for term 2. Then I'm coming, can't believe how fast the last few months have gone. Only 3 months left!!
Well, that's about it for now, I'll try and do one more blog before I come home. I guess I'll see you soon.
