Kath Goes Walkies
Hi everyone, Sorry it's taken a while for me to get round to doing an update...Jo's much better at it than I am :) Just arrived back in Kuala Lumpur from a week and a bit of exploring the west coast...and just had first warm shower since leaving here, bliss!! Will start where Jo left off... Arriving in KL on the overnight train from Taman Negara, we were slightly worse for wear after a night spent trying to manoeuvre ourselves into comfortable sleeping positions across the seats on the train. But thanks to the remarkably efficient public transport system we were checked-in at our hostel in no time, and immediately went straight to bed. A few hours later, in the middle of the afternoon, we were finally rejuvenated and raring to go...so off we went in search for food, which took all of five minutes as we stopped a couple of doors down for chicken wings and nachos...could have been back home just then! Afterwards, venturing much futher, we headed to Chinatown to check out the night market and practice my haggling skills...did ok i thought, getting down from RM7 to RM5 for a necklace, a difference of about 30p - how good am I?? :) The following morning we got up bright and early, to head to the Petronas towers in time to get the first come, first served tickets to go up. But I think everyone else had the same idea, as the foyer was full of queuing tourists at 9am. Luckily we managed to just make the cut for that day, and so off we went to see KL from a different perspective at 170m above ground. A few pics later, we began our retail therapy session. Suffice to say, my rucksack's a tad heavier now and am thinking that soon would be a good time to send some stuff home!! Later in the day, we encountered an indoor themepark in one of the malls and decided that it was too good to miss! Had a good laugh being kids again, although a couple of rides left you hanging upside down just long enough to make even the most seasoned thrill-rider a little nervous...Then it was off to our second tower of the day, Menara KL - a telecoms tower, with amazing views of the city at night. The next day saw the momentous occasion of my finally moving into the digital age, by purchasing a very classy new camera :) so now I can actually put up pics for you all to enjoy!! It was also the day that Jo had to go, after much rushing, and getting drenched by the sudden onburst of rain we were at the airport saying goodbye - and then there was just me. The first thing I did going solo? Had the longest lie-in I had since I saw the last of Blighty (well, maybe aside from the morning after the full moon party...!). Then took it upon myself to explore KL on foot - going to Merdeka Square, which was covered in marquees and crowded with Malaysian tourists who had come down to celebrate Merdeka (the country's birthday). Randomly, one of them asked if they could have a picture taken with me (think it was the hair(!))...it gave me an insight of what it was like to be a filmstar for a couple of seconds! On to the Lake Gardens for a nice wee stroll in the huge park, the one place that was more than 10 mins away from any metro station...so of course, the monsoon gods decided to pick that moment for their daily few hours of rain and thunder. Ended up sharing a shelter with a couple of park wardens, who were amazed that I didn't smoke and seemed to be very interested in Belfast's political situation!!...Lovely people, but managed to escape eventually... Off to the highlands next! Hope you enjoyed your read :) Kath xoxo
