So we left Santiago on Wednesday and arrived on Friday despite only flying for 13 hours. Bizarre and slightly confusing....Also strange is that fact that we can understand people and signs. It's nice but also feels like it's all a bit easier now.
Auckland is just a city really. It's ok, but not overly impressive. We have done a city tour, been to an aquarium and to a museum to learn a bit about the Maori cuture here. What is interesting and slightly disturbing is that a volcano is due to erupt in New Zealand this year so I will have to keep you posted about that one. Don't worry mum, they have emergency evacuation procedures here, we're not in South America now.
We have sampled some of the nightlife here in Auckland (you have to compare and contrast all cities. Naturally) It was a little reminiscent of freshers week at uni - feet were sticking to the floor and cheap, nasty drinks.
Our hostel is not the best. We sampled our first proper mixed dorm and after 2 nights, we demanded to be upgraded to the luxury, all girls floor! Now, we can cope with boy smells, even uni sex toilets, but poor Leah was traumatically kept awake after spending the night on the top bunk of some newly met nymphs. We will avoid mixed dorms in future. Plus we got free champagne with our upgrade. It tasted vile but as a backpacker, free takes on a whole new meaning and you will eat it, drink it or use it if it has not been paid for!
We are leaving the city for some adventures (trekking has been mentioned, groan) but also a load of fun stuff so I'll keep you posted as ever!
