On Tuesday after work, Tarek (from work) drove us to the "Madinat Jumeirah Souk" for dinner. Lindsay had recommended it to me (she was in Dubai in 2006 I think) and it was definitely touristy with the hotels and restaurants, but I like touristy. This place looked huge, so I convinced him to go in and have a drink with us. We passed a ton of small shops, and there was an amphitheater where they were setting up for a night of music.People were sitting in the amphitheater being served by waiters and smoking hookah. We kept walking though and went to a "bar" where we sat on bean bag chairs, drank Belgian beer and smoked some hookah. Next, Tarek made a reservation at an Italian place, Toscana , so we went to look around and saw a great view of the Burj al Arab. Finally dinner! It was worth the wait.We sat out in the terrace overlooking the water drinking vino. Here they have boats that take people from their hotels around to the different areas of the Souk (It's that big).To top it off, we had some grappa - that I swore tasted more like Tequila than grappa.I guess I will only be drinking grappa in Italy from now on. For the final stop of the night, we went to Trader's Vic across the way.Definitely an expat place - I actually met people from Perth.
On Wednesday I heard a story at work today that I had to look into.Travelers entering Dubai can be jailed for 4 years or more if found in possession of illegal drugs, including poppy seeds from bread rolls and prescription and over-the-counter medicines such as codeine. (This I knew already). What I didn't know was "A father-of-three who was found with a microscopic speck of cannabis stuck to the bottom of one of his shoes has been sentenced to four years in a Dubai prison.Keith Brown, was travelling through the UAE on his way back to England when he was stopped as he walked through Dubai's main airport.A search by customs officials uncovered a speck of cannabis weighing just 0.003g - so small it would be invisible to the naked eye and weighing less than a grain of sugar - on the tread of one of his shoes.Additionally, one man has even been jailed for possession of three poppy seeds left over from a bread roll he ate at Heathrow Airport. If suspicious of a traveler, customs officials can use high-tech equipment to uncover even the slightest trace of drugs, and are allowed to test the urine and bloodstream of a traveler."
Good thing I didn't travel through Amsterdam!!! Tonight we had dinner at Jumeriah Towers & then went up to Vu Bar on the 51st floor.Great selection of drinks, but it didn't have as good of a view as I expected for the price.
