Kate's Chronicles
Surprise! Surprise! Sunday afternoon I was invited to go shopping with some of my students again....hmmm will I/ won' t I......what a stupid question - of course I will. A beautiful warm, sunny day even as we head into "winter" and silly me wore long sleeves so sweltered all afternoon.
Even some of the locals are getting to know me now and I get a "Ni Hao" as I walk past and am greeted with smiles when I return the greeting. Some of the local children have never seen a 'lao wai' (foreigner) before so its great that they now speak to me and not run off. They think it is very funny that I am a "lao shi" (teacher) and keep asking my students how they understand me!!!
Anyway I was very good in town and hardly bought a thing BUT I did get very excited to find tea bags and cows milk........oh bliss......I can finally have a cup of tea Aussie style. As much as I enjoy Chinese tea I have so missed my morning cuppa - weird the little things we take for granted!!
And to top off the day we had KFC for dinner!! My first western style food since I arrived and I cant say it was great. KFC is pretty much the same the world over I think but my students enjoyed the treat.
Back to work this week only to find that my students have exams Wed- Fri so guess who is having a 5 day weekend!!!! Gotta love this work in China even if was near on impossible to keep their attention in today's lessons!! Then I found out that some of my classes actually have their first exam TONIGHT. Poor kids - a full day of lessons and then an exam during "study" time now.
Needless to say I have been sitting here this evening planning what to do on my bonus days off. Think I might wander into the city and have a massage and manicure tomorrow and then am thinking its an opportune time to go visiting the tailors to get a winter coat made and maybe check out the new range of winter boots.....what do you think??? Sounds like a plan to me.
Bye for now. xxx

Di Sounds like you should get a taste of being a real teacher! Being held in such high esteem and getting bonus days off, what is all this?? I am now into writing reports and dealing with the Nov/ Dec mayhem. Roll on Dec 17, that will be a great day.Keep enjoying sis.
wayne Hi I agree roll on 17 dec.........I just had a week teaching in St Marys and my experiences with the locals were nothing like yours and i am still trying to decide if it was a foreign country!!!!!!!........still reading.........its great stuff you put on. My Ben is not well in Melbourne so there may be a mercy trip there if things dont improve..........keep well is the time going quickly for you?
Kate Oh dear sis.....you poor thing. I think you picked the wrong area of teaching!! Not only am I recognised as a teacher but an expert as well......wouldn't get that in Aus!!!Dec 17 will be just another teaching day for me....I don't get the super duper looong holiday that you get so naturally I need my long wekends each fortnight and the occasional 5-day weekend!!!Good luck with that report writing...he...he...he....did I tell you I dont have to write assesments on my students!!
