Variety is the spice of life…
After almost a month skiing in Fernie and with very little snow it was time for something different. Our friends Jody and Gabe drove us to Kimberley for a day at Fernie's sister resort. When we arrived the clouds had rolled in and the resort village hung under a thick grey blanket. Visibility was going to be a problem.
We rode the express chair to the top of the runs and as we climbed I couldn't help but smile. We broke through the clouds into sunshine and were treated to a glorious view of the mountains. They looked as if they'd sprung up from the clouds.
It made for interesting skiing. The first part of the run in beautiful sunshine; the next in a soupy fog and the last under the grey roof of cloud.
Kimberley is quite different to Fernie. Its more of a family resort with its wide groomers. It was a lot of fun though cruising around, doing our best to keep mostly to the sunny elevations.
The boys spent quite a bit of time in the Black Forest, a series of narrow, but not so steep ungroomed runs on the far side of the mountain. Had they been groomed they wouldn't have been labelled black. Jody and I mostly kept to the groomed blues and blacks, our confidence not yet allowing us to tackle the bumpy stuff.
It was a beautiful day and I'm glad we came. But its not big enough to hold my attention for two months. I'm glad that we chose Fernie with its varied terrain, 5 alpine bowls and legendary powder (even if we've yet to see very little of it)!
