So guys, you last heard from us when we were in Cancun! The next stop was Playa del Carmen....better known to local and tourists as just "Playa".
We were reluctant to leave the comforts of the resort however we knew there were months of adventures ahead and we quickly changed our attitudes as we boarded the ADO bus for our long and tiring journey to Playa....actually was only a 1 hour bus trip but it was pretty hot when we got there and it felt like our 5 min walk to the hostel was a 10 day hike.
We arrived a little early (shocking i know) so put our bags in storage and set our to explore. The town itself is quite small which was perfect as everthing was in walking distance. The atmosphere compared to Cancun was different too. We found it be slightly cleaner on the streets, a lot more chilled and generally just a nice relaxed hippy vibe. I guess u can call it a mexican Byron Bay.
After finding our bearings and checking out some markets we had some lunch and then checked out the beach. As it was a public beach (Cancun was a resort beach) and it was a little busier and the water wasn't as blue as cancun yet it was still spectacular all the same. From the shores we also had a view of the island of Cozumel.
That night we planned to check out the night life of Playa. We headed down to the communal area of the hostel with drinks and cards in hand. As its low season here, it was pretty quiet but there were a few people floating around. After about an hour of cards we were offered free tequila shots from the receptionist as it was the saturday night special. As mentioned it was quiet and lex and i scored most of the shots!! I can hear u thinking....yew....free drinks. We thought the same until our 5th shot in half an hour was offered to us. We ended up making friends with the rest of the travellers. A german and russian girl, an Aussie guy and a couple of guys from Guetamala.
Long story short, we never made it out that night. But great night nonetheless.
Day two of Playa consisted of more town exploring and beach chilling. That night however we did make it out and went to an awesome beach bar and restaurant called Fusion. The Aussie guy ended up meeting us there and we had a nice cruisey night chatting and watching beach fire twirlers with the cultural sounds of a mariachi band in the background.
I'm boggled as to why they call this the low season as the weather has been unreal and the tourists are scarce. This should be called the AWESOME season!! No crowds, cheaper prices and a better vibe.....Yes please!!
Overall, Playa was a hit and we could have stayed a lot longer......however seducing thoughts of Tulum pulled us to the bus station. Another 1 hour trip and we were there!!!
