So, yesterday afternoon I opened my email inbox to find this notice:
Dear Ms. Katherine Nickelchok,
Good afternoon from t he Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute. I am pleased to inform you that you have been awarded with a Shastri International Youth Internship award 2011-12...
After spinning in my office chair, squealing like a school girl and inappropriately swearing in front of my co-workers, it hit me: Holy sh*t, I'm going to India!
I applied for the internship late last semester, believing that it was a long-shot. To put things in perspective, this is an all expenses paid trip and extremely competitive. A paid working internship is almost unheard of in the Global Development world, let alone one that covers flights, visas, accommodation, food... everything!
Starting as soon as I can get my visa, I will be spending three months living in a rural community in India. I applied for the position in Hyderabad, but I can also be placed in Chandigarh or Bangalore at the institute's discretion. If I end up in Hyderabad, I will be doing research for India's National Council of Rural Institutes (NCRI), founded on Mahatma Gandhiji's revolutionary concept of Nai Talim.
As cliché as it sounds, the whole idea of being in India by the end of the month feels like a dream.I'm having a hard time even getting genuinely excited about it because the reality of the internship hasn't hit me at all yet. One thing is for sure though, this is going to be a busy few upcoming weeks!
Looking forward to brushing the dust of my backpack! ^_^
