Hello everyone,
Sorry we know its been ages but we have not really had the time to sit and write... However, you'll all be pleased to know its raining here now... so we can catch up on our emails etc...
OK so much has happened since our last email so we will try to be brief...
After our last email we spent a few days in sihanoukville in Cambodia. It is a gorgeous sunny beach resort and we visited beautiful Islands and beaches, did some snorkelling and had a BBQ on the beach. There was an awesome bar with a tree house and you sat on cushions and wrote your order on a white board and sent it down to the bar in a bucket (tied to a rope) and the drinks came up the same way! Great fun!
I (Kate) fell in a ditch (on the way to the pub) and cut all my knee which was really funny. The scab has just come off now but it looked pretty bad at the time!
We went to the Killing fields and Genocide museum which was really sad but interesting. We saw the mass graves and a tree where they used to hold babies legs and beat the babies against the tree until they died. It certainly made us both think. The population of Cambodia was only 8 million at the time and 3 million died.
Its horrible to think this was only 30 years ago!
Then we left Cambodia and went to Vietnam, we were both really sad as we loved Cambodia sooooo much! Anyway Vietnam started off really good and Saigon was pretty cool. We found a great bar where we spent most of our evenings. We watched the rugby final which was rubbish and we wished we hadn't stayed up till 4am to watch it!!!
We organised a surprise birthday party for one of our group on the roof of our hotel. The view was amazing and we had a pool up there as well. Its pretty cool having a pool party on the 9th floor of a hotel! It was the tallest hotel in the area and we got really drunk and went swimming. There were loads of inflatables which we all had great fun playing on.. there is a great pic of me which is on someone elses camera but I am sure they will tag me on facebook soon enough...
We went to a water park which was great fun and cost about 2 quid each including the bus to get there... Then it was time to say farewell to the rest of our group and we were on our own!
I nearly had a heart failure on the bus and I'm sure none of you will be surprised of this story about Gareth and the service station toilet... The bus stopped for a 10 min toilet break and we both went for number 1's. Then we popped in the shop to get some snacks and Gareth decided he needed a number 2! Great so while he was away the bus driver started beeping and everyone got on the bus, to my horror he started to pull away! As you can imagine I freaked and ran to the driver... anyway luckily he waited and Gareth strolled up a few minutes later! Thank god!! Only gareth could do that!!!
Our first stop was the quiet and peaceful Mui Ne beach great for windsurfing etc etc. Anyway it was out of season and far too quiet for us so we have come to Nha Trang. Its nice here but its raining at the moment. We went to a mud spa yesterday which was really good and then spent the rest of the day in the swimming pool which was 38 degrees C. Lovely! (Especially as it was raining....)
Happy hour at the local Sailing club consisted of very cheap Local Buckets! So us and a few friends we have met drank a few and the girls ended up carrying most of the blokes home. Here is the pick pocket capital of Vietnam and all the guys had something stolen. One guy lost his mobile and the rest was all cash. Gareth had his wallet emptied but luckily it was tied to his body so he still has an empty wallet and all his cash cards etc. They just took his cash (about 800,000 dong - or 20 quid) so its annoying but at least they didn't get the camera etc! So everyone is being extra careful today and everyone is really hungover. Hence todays activity is internet cafe and then were catching the night train to Hoi An tonight. Our tour group is there and they say its really good so we are going to meet them for a few drinks.
If the weather is bad there we are cuttign Vietnam short and heading to Laos much sooner. Its still really hot but just wet! Anyway hope we haven't bored you too much but as its been ages since we last updated you and I feel like we have missed loads out on this email but we thought you'd be asleep if we wrote it all down!
Hope your all OK.
Love Kate & Gareth
