Our journey here was our first one on the Magic bus, and unfortunately the journeys all involve various stops along the way at little villages, lakes, waterfalls etc. But eventually we arrived in the tiny town of Franz Josef, which only exists thanks to the glacier, about lunchtime. We watched Van Helsing in the afternoon and looked around the town (which took all of three minutes), and had a quiet evening in as Nat had developed a bad cold.
Unfortunately when we woke up the next morning, ready for our full day glacier hike, Nat was feeling even worse, and had been up the night before being sick, so i did the hike on my own. I met some lovely Irish people who i spent most of the time with, and we had a great tour guide, Brett, who was only 19! Surpriingly enough i didn't get cold at all, and actually had to take layers off, but they did provide us with useful things like woolly socks, gloves, hats, raincoats, waterproof trousers, waterproof walking boots and special crampons to attach to them for walking on the ice. We spent the 1st hour just walking across the rocky valley to the glacier, and then climbed the steep ice steps to the area where it flattened out a bit. We only stopped really for a half an hour lunch break, and by the end of the day my thighs were killing me! We went through some really tight crevasses, caves and wormholes which was great, and at times i felt like i was in Antarctica! The glacier itself was beautiful, and it was an amazing experience.
Luckily when i got back to the hostel Nat was feeling better, and after another early night we set off bright and early on Friday down to Queenstown ...
