Hola!
A reasonably quick update for those of you who are interested!
We have both recovered after a nasty bout of Beaver Fever, most probably caused by infected food or water (and I´m blaming the animal sanctuary in Yoloso following our bike ride, there were monkeys all over the buffet!). Anyway, those of you who don't know what it is, Beaver Fever is gross and gave us chronic diarrhea and vomiting. I was the first to go down with it, and just as i was getting better, Nick decided he´d like to have a go! So we switched roles and I did my best to nurse him back to health, but when you have a fear of vomit and are reasonably impatient at the best of times, like yours truly, it's not fun for either party!
So, we were held captive by our hotel room and various bodily functions for 10 days! We went out of our minds with boredom, despite cable tv, chess and cards. We eventually made it out on Sunday to visit the Yavari ship - built from steel produced in Birmingham no less, and transported across the Andes by poor mules which took 6 years! Interesting. So that was nice, and on Monday we spent the morning visiting the Uros/Floating Islands which really was interesting, but like everything else they have kind of been ruined by tourism. We then got a bus and made it to Cuzco that night, only a week behind schedule, argh!
We've had a leisurely few days here, more than we would have liked, but due to a national strike and lots of tourists! we couldn´t get a train to Machu Picchu until Friday (tomorrow). We are really looking forward to that, despite the 5.30am wake up call. Then on Saturday we will be off on an overnight bus - the first in a long time - to Arequipa. Despite the loss of time, we are still determined to fit in everything that we had originally planned, with the exception of the Nazca lines, but the thought of a sickening ride in a 4-seater aircraft never really appealed to me! As I said on the message board, we are going to be breaking our necks to fit everything in in the last week of our trip so we may be incommunicado, but don´t worry. As soon as we reach America (21st July), we will post all the photos that we haven´t been able to in the last few weeks.
We are really looking forward to getting to America...we have really missed home comforts during our recent illnesses! and have been dreaming of hot weather, new swimming pools!, bloomin´ onions and macaroni cheese (ok, the latter is my dream!). That said, we have had an amazing time and refuse to let recent events taint our overall impression of South America - how very forgiving of us! It's not over yet though, lots to do.
Dad...I am especially gutted that you won't be home for most of our visit, but Nick's gutted too, he was hoping for some serious chess action. We will have to plan out our last 10 days with you well...and i have a little something up my sleeve that i require your time on, i thank you! (Did I mention that I also require huge amounts of money!?). Yeah, yeah.
Hasta luego,
KashNickov
