What an amazing day, we were picked up from the hotel by a driver from Patara, it was about a 45 minute drive to the Elephant farm and we arrived at 08:30. We were the first there and we stopped to wait for other people, there were 4 elephants there at the first stop 2 babies and 2 Mommas one was pregnant. The babies were 1 year old and 7 months old and the one year old was real mischievous and so funny. We fed them bananas and got to strokes and touch them. They are quite hairy and spikey, and the Mommas are huge but such beautiful animals.
Other people arrived and we were given an information talk about the elephants and what we could expect from our day we learned about the four things to a happy elephant .. These were if there ears flap and there tails wag, also if there tears are running down there face (elephants don't have tear ducts) if they are dusty on both sides and also if they have healthy poo. We had to check there poo by pulling it apart and making sure it was wet and green .. It didn't smell, it's a bad sign if it's black . Now it was time to meet our elephant who we got to look after for the day, we had a basket full of bananas and we fed them straight in there mouth using a command to open there mouth we patted them and said Dee Dee which is good girl . My elephant was called Bee-co and Marks was called Ma-Moo. This was amazing and they eat so much.We then got some bamboo leaves tied together and cleaned all the dust and tiny stones off there backs. It's not good for the elephant if you sit on there back with the dust and stones on as they rub on there back, once we had done this we fed them the bamboo. Then it was time to wash them in the river we had a scrubbing brush and a basket to throw water on them. They have lines on them which all go different ways and you have to go with the lines. We cleaned them by brushing and the they laid down and we sat on there backs and cleaned the hard to reach areas. This was great fun there not easy to climb on ... We then all lined up with our backs to the and they sprayed us with there trunks. This was fun ..
We were then given elephant pants and a top to wear to stop there spikey hairs sticking in our legs. We were ready to ride up into the jungle we were show how to climb on them !!!
The elephant put her leg up for me to stand on and I held her ear and pulled myself up OMG this was easier said than done believe me. Finally with a bit of help I was on, we had to sit right on there mech with our knees behind there ears and feet resting near the shoulder blades. We trekked up some really steep jungle paths which at times was quite scary we soon got used to it although Mark was hilarious as looked scared to death lol and was hanging on for dear life. There were some sheer drops and one foot wrong I'm sure we would of been over the edge. The elephants were clever and knew where to go . We stopped at the top for lunch and it was beautiful , there was chicken bananas jacket potatoes lots of fruit. I tried ramatongs and dragon fruit it was beautiful. Mark was funny again and was shaking whilst making his roll up and wanted to go back down on moped ( you had to be there to see it it was so funny)
We didn't have to go as far back down as we came up and this time we were on a path. We said goodbye to Bee-co and Ma-moo and gave them a hug and kiss.
This was an amazing experience and we loved every minute we will never forget it.
