Karen's Travels
Hello all
Legs aching from yesterday's climb! Were taken by a local (Chinese) guide to Tianamen Square on the metro (underground) this morning. On the square, it really comes home to you that you are in a Communist country. Red flags waving, huge painting of Chairman Mao, soldiers keeping watch and vehicles circling to make sure everyone is behaving themselves! From there, we went around the Forbidden City, so called because, until the twentieth century, it was barred to commoners. It was the home of the numerous emperors of China and his concubines - he had 3,000! They were waited upon by eunuchs to prevent them having affairs with servants! Have had a lazy afternoon; visit to the supermarket to buy provisions for breakfast on the train in the morning. Going to a restaurant for Beijing duck tonight. Thanks for your email, Bill and Ann! Glad you had a great trip. The people on our tour are a really great bunch, the oldest being Bill who must be in his seventies. Please forgive me if I repeat myself - can't remember what I wrote last time! Off into the 'real' China now - will be glad to get away from the city. Love to everyone. xxx
