We have arrived in Bangkok after an emotional week of leaving Sydney to move back home to Ireland.
Bangkok is chaotic and dirty. The heat is cruel. It's like walking into an oven. Bangkok has a charm about it too though. On the train from the airport to Khao San Road, it's difficult not to notice the contrast between rich and poor. High rise buildings overshadow the slums and rubbish dumps.
We are staying in Dang Derm Hotel on Khao San Road. It's very nice. We don't feel like backpackers at al! We want to join the madness of Khao San Road but the tiredness won't let us. We sip a cocktail and a beer and retire for the night.
The next day, a tuk tuk driver offers to drive us around the city for a 100 baht! We visited the grounds of The Grand Palace which was really beautiful. We also knelt in front of The Lucky Buddha in the hope he might help us win the lotto Our favourite temple was Wat Pho. The temple is beautifully decorated with coloured jewels that look like emeralds and ruby's and it's also where the reclining Buddha rests. It was interesting to watch the monks and Thai people praying
We also took a trip on a long boat to a floating village and to experience how Thai People live on the river. It was sad to see the pollution in the river and and to see children playing in it.
That night, we ventured to Rambutri Road and had some of the best Pad Thai I've ever eaten. The bars were also good with live music for entertainment. We decided to skip The Ping Pong Show- not really our scene. Anything goes in Khao San Road.
