Hi all, and welcome to the beautiful city of Salzburg! This morning we departed the hotel with our new driver Marco, who will now remain with us for the remainder of this leg of the trip (through Frankfurt). We had a beautiful drive through the Austrian countryside on the autobahn to Salzburg. The drive is approximately 3 1/2 hours and it was a beautiful day, so we were able to just sit back and enjoy the beautiful landscape as it went by.
Once we arrived into Salzburg, we met up with Michaela, our guide for the day. Because of events going on in the city, tour buses are not able to get down many of the streets, so today was a walking tour. But, as much as my feet may disagree, I think this was even better than spending the day in a bus! We started our day at Mirabelle Gardens where we saw two different wedding parties taking pictures in the gardens. We didn't spend much time there as that's on the agenda tomorrow morning. We headed off to see one of the houses that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lived in while in Salzburg. As we walked, we also saw the hotels where Christopher Plummer and Julie Andrews stayed while filming the Sound of Music.
After crossing the River Salzach, we entered the alleyways where the shopping is located. Among the shops was also the house where Mozart was born. After a tour of what is now a museum and learning more about Mozart's life, we had free time to do a little shopping. There were so many unique shops, but you also saw a few familiar ones (like Fossil! Laura and Teresa, how did we miss that the last time???).
Our shopping done, we headed off for St. Peter's Cathedral. Nearby was also the University Church as well as Salzburg University. All this was fronting the Hohensalzburg, or better known as The Fortress, on top of the hill. On our way through the maze of squares, we also visited the cemetery of St. Peter's, which was also used in the Sound of Music (it's where the Von Trapp family hid while escaping Austria). This was one of the most beautiful cemeteries I've ever seen! Lots of the wrought iron crosses and tons of flowers. It was very peaceful and relaxing to walk through.
The last thing we learned on our tour was how to get up to the fortress. There are two ways, by walking or by funicular. After the 334 steps at St. Stephen's yesterday, my vote is to go by funicular! That will be on the agenda tomorrow morning during our free time before leaving beautiful Salzburg. We ended the evening with a nice walk back to our hotel and dinner right here in the hotel. It's a good thing I walked so much today, hopefully it was enough to counteract what I ate tonight!!!
