Diary - South Africa - ABC - week 7
I apologise for this weeks diary, I haven't kept up as well as I could, it's very draining trying to keep it up with all we do, I apologise.
Friday 25th - We were at Oranjekloof in the morning. Just me and Patrick went, Liam stayed at the flat to clean up. From here we went to get schedule sorted again, it's all done now, we ammended the schedule ourselves.
Me and Patrick went into a maths class. then a xhosa class (main language spoke this side of Hout Bay) during the lesson, it rained loads! The teacher left the class early and all the students stayed quiet when she was gone, we realised we didn't need to be there any longer so we went home. We had a few hours spare until we had the Mariners wharf workshop with Marquerite.
Marquerite picked us up and we went to sentinel, there were no girls. Because of this, we went for a meal with Marquerithe. During this meal, we spoke about some tournament in a place called simonstown, her involvement in Hangberg and Gullien-Barre syndrome.
On our drive back we saw the football at the pitch, with the rain before in the day, this was a massive shock! We went to workshop pub and from there we went to Rondebosch.
Saturday 24th - I woke up, went on the Internet, went to checkers to get food and tickets for the under 21 8 nation challenge.
We went to the games via a taxi after a walk looking for a combi. Saw Kenya vs Japan and then Brazil vs Cameroon.
Went back via combis to observatory to Trenchtown to try and see the England vs Norway, game wasn't on!
From here we went to Rondebosch, slept in the conference room at marsh after skyping Saleem. It was the first time I have spoke I him, the weird thing about it was we spoke like it was normal, like there has never even been a break! I can tell that I miss him though.
Sunday 25th - We had football at Hout bay, against a team from hangberg, they beat us 5-1, we are not a football team!
From there we chilled at marsh, shock! We went to spar for food which we ate back at marsh. After eating, I went to Skype mother and Rebecca.
As i was leaving the computer room, liam came in with the phone with a distressing text. We got news about Kenny, the football coach we see like 4 times a week. he had passed away on Friday. This was an absolute shock, i grlt genuinely felt sick in my stomach. We saw him the day before, and his birthday was monday, absolutely gutting, he was a genuinely caring guy who wanted to do stuff for the children here. Not cool :(. Got a lift back to Hout Bay. When i got back i just wanted to go to bed.
Monday 26th - Woke up, me and liam went to La Cuccina. In here we met a man from Johannesburg, he was an artist said if we could get there, he'd show us around as he lived on a game reserve, would love that! He left us with a business card.
We left La Cuccina and went to kenny's shack to see what was happening, if we get more information about what had happened. At the shack, there were four men in there, probably family, clearing it out, we asked what happened, it was thought he had an accident, rather then his HIV. As he had a drink problem, it may be related to being drunk, got a bit more information but it's still all hazy.
From there we went to the football workshop, played with around 8 of them. Went to Penzance field with Cheryl, Patrick gathered all the young eagles to break the news to them, they didn't seem very upset. Went to woolworths and got dinner, thanks to Cheryl.
We had dinner and then went to the workshop again, with Some of the Rondebosch lot and some MITS group. Wasn't bad, came home and slept.
Tuesday 27th - There is literally not a lot to write for this day, it's a write off day.
It rained really bad so we didn't go to Oranjekloof, went up to Cheryl's, chilled throughout the day, didn't do anything productive.
I went to the football field in the evening, nobody was there so we met with Lindsay, got our weekly money and went to Rondebosch, chilled there. Repeat, write off day.
Wednesday 28th - We went to sentinel for the first time to 2 weeks as we missed the last weeks with the premier league players coming in doing the workshops.
We had a few classes, there was nothing new here, just girls doing netball and boys doing football. There is not much to report here. From here, we went to checkers for the weekly shop, we only spent 50 each!
We got home and from there, we got a lift to Rondebosch, from here we were going to a karaoke bar in long street, i won't go into a lot of detail but i got very drunk! Me and Patrick were meant to do a duo but it never happened!
Thursday 29th - Liam wasn't in Hout Bay as he stayed at marsh so we didn't go to sentinel. This reason as well as having Gabriella with us.
I didn't want to waste the day so I wandered through the imizamo yethu, i rode to the township, I left my bike locked up near the bottom, at the police station and just literally wondered for a few hours. it's a lot bigger then it looks from the outside!
I was looking around for over an hour, just seeing how it all is, everyone is outside their house. I met a girl in there who I saw at the bottom of the township (it's all on a hill) and by all odds, i was walking in a certain part of the township, i bumped into her again! She went to camps bay high school (high up school, very good) and this was paid for by a volunteer she met from years ago, in 2007, how nice! She showed me around some of the areas near her house. One place was a hair salon which said they could do my hair for 70 rand, sweet! There was also The church which she reads at, she does a lot for the community. The township needs more people like her! she invited me to an event on the 16th June for youth day, near where we are living now in the Penzance estate, I may have to make an appearance. She showed me a place to get some chips, not bad for 6 rand! She guided me back down to the bottom of the township and we parted ways.
I went back to the flat and got Patrick ready as Marquerithe was taking us out for dinner and to a comedy event. Liam was still in Rondebosch. We went for dinner in camps bay, there we met up with Johan, her husband, the dinner was amazing, from there we went to the theatre for the comedy. It was like fawlty towers, set in a hotel. It took a while to get into, as they set the scene but it got really funny towards the end as there were lots of puns, lovely!
From there Marquerithe took us back and told us about the 28 gang, a gang here, and a documentary about them, I won't be watching it until I get home! They sound like bad people! We got back in, spoke with Gabriella who was staying at ours and then hit the hay.
