Noosa, Australia (3rd Feb 2008)
Ah, Noosa, the holiday hot spot for the Australian Celebrities. This is where we would like to describe a beautiful, deserted white sandy shore, fringed with palm trees and gently lapping turquoise seas. Well unfortunately for us the last few days it has been raining, 30C but raining, so we haven't had a chance to check out the beach or the National Park here which is meant to be amazing; to top things off the very expensive hostel we have been staying in is a total stinking horrid dump. As with much of the coast it seems that Noosa is like Benidorm only with better/pricier food and beer bellies are swapped with bleach blonde hair.
When our bus pulled into the transit centre in the middle of the very small town, we were looking forward to a couple of days down on the beach not doing anything and just trying to make some kind of start on a sun tan. We got here just after 10am and surprisingly there was a small white shuttle bus with Koalas Backpackers written on it waiting for us to take us down the road to the hostel. When the mini bus was full the driver said he was just going to do a quick run down to the beach and national park so we could see where they were and get a glimpse of the beautiful scenery. Since the sun had only just popped back out from the clouds which had poured all morning we expected the main beach to be dead, but no, every possible square centimetre of stunning beach is crammed with semi clad, oiled up Aussies all lying prostrate before the god of skin cancer. It was also apparent that when they aren't all squeezed together on the beach like a human Tetris game, they're provoking surf rages amongst each other in the sea making any chance of a dip seem a long shot. Great, we thought!
There is an alternative to this madness though. It seemed as when we got up towards the national park, it's like stepping into another world. For some reason, the masses seem to steer clear of this bit and yet to us it looked like the best; the bit you imagine on a postcard. Much to our disappointment we never got to visit the national park as the rain didn't stop and confined us to our dorm room for our one free day in Noosa.
