Who would have thought that I'd be actually living my dream?! I am so incredibly excited to be headed to Columbia but I have to admit, I have not planned much and the unknown can be both liberating and intimidating. These are the challenges that make a person grow so bring it on:)
Somehow I managed to get clothes for every kind of weather, a yrs worth of medication, toiletries and all other necessities including electronics into one small bag, a small backpack and a purse! I will admit that my first several tries were unsuccessful and I had to ask the two travel experts, my mom and dad... thanks guys!
So I made it to Miami and I will say I am incredibly happy that I was checked in on the web as the line this morning at 6am for a 9am flight is the longest I have ever seen in my life... Note to self to make sure I do the same throughout the world!!
For all travelers going to South America please know that you have to have a ticket back into the US in order to get into the countries. I got an around the world ticket from AirTreks (Laura was incredibly helpful) but we all thought that as long as I had a ticket to the next country I'd be fine. Nope; make sure you have a print out of a reservation back to the US from South America.
I haven't spent that much time in Miami so I didn't realize that it feels like I'm in a different country. The main language spoken is Spanish: from the ticketing agents and security people to the travelers and restaurant workers... I didn't know if I should speak English or Spanish since we are still in the US so I did a mix of both. I need to practice my Spanish desperately so I don't feel so foolish when speaking my broken Spanish. I'll find a class in Santa Marta. I realized this morning that I will be speaking only Spanish for he next 3 months... Hopefully my grammar will be better by than. I can have a conversation in Spanish but it's my vocabulary and grammar I need to work on.
I'm off to Columbia, farewell
