Happiness Is The Road
Woke up to the lovely sea view at Streaky Bay again. I had a choice of places to go today. I had been told that Elliston was lovely but my Lonely Planet guide book had mentioned how nice Venus Bay was and they were not far apart. I opted for Venus Bay on the promise of a gaggle of pelicans. I certainly wasn't disappointed. On the way I stopped to have a look at Murphys Haystacks. These are ancient sculptural granite rock formations or inselbergs. They are millions of years old and have been carved by the wind into exotic aerodynamic shapes. The rocks aquired their name from an Irish agricultural expert, who advocated that to produce good hay farmers should harrow their land for the best results. While travelling with the coach he noticed the rock formations in the distance and informed the coach driver and passengers that this farmer harrowed his land to produce so much hay and fodder. Being located on Murphys property they became known as Murphys Haystacks. I found the camp site and checked in at reception. It was very hot today, well over 30 degrees. I was directed to a spot near some shade and right on the sea front again. There was a fantastic view over the bay here. I noticed that there were loads of pelicans sat in the bay but there were a couple on the camp site just a few feet away. I went over with my camera straight away to get some pictures. I have never seen pelicans this close before, they are really beautiful birds. They have these beautiful big eyes with yellow around them, these huge pink ish beaks and they look simply amazing when they fly. You can really hear their wings flap. As I starting taking photos another one came over, then another, then another until there were about 10 pelicans there, it was incredible. I got talking to an old couple from Adelaide in the caravan next to me. She told me that the pelicans thought I had food and that's why they had all flown over. I was near the fish cleaning station and when people clean and cut their fish they throw fish bits in the air for the pelicans to catch. I saw this happening later on and there's a real scramble and fight amongst the pelicans for who gets the grub. Also the seagulls get in on the act and start annoying the pelicans and all hell breaks loose! The couple from Adelaide really liked Venus Bay and told me that they had been coming here for the last 45 years. I could see why as it was a very peaceful and lovely place. Later on I went on the walking trail around the bay head. The lady at the camp site reception said that I might see dolphins if I was lucky, I wasn't! It was a good walk though. At one point I saw a load of ants streaming along this flat piece of sand. It was an ant motorway with the ants moving in both directions and obviously with a job to do and keen to get somewhere. The 'motorway' went on for ages with spur roads going off all over the place. It was fascinating. There aren't too many flies here but when it started to get dark the mosquitos came out with vengeance. There were loads of them probably because of being so close to water. Thought I'd got rid of them out of the camper before bed but I was wrong. As I was going to sleep I could hear the little *******s buzzing around my ears. Squashed a couple of them with my book but just couldn't get them all. I had repellent on and hoped for the best. Still got a few bites though but never mind, it's a small price to pay for being in such a wonderful country.
Jay was telling me that people ask her what I do all the time. They seem to think that I must get bored. I find loads to do and I am never bored. I'm in a new place nearly every day, I meet interesting people, I read, I listen to music, I blog, I ponder, I drive a lot, I soak up the sun. It's wonderful to be free of the rat race. I could live in this camper travelling around forever. Jay's answer to people asking what I do is that I live an idyllic lifestyle. That is so true and long may it continue.
